Max’s Sacrifice in Doctor Odyssey Ep. 15 Reveals Key to Show’s Success

Caution: Contains Spoilers for Doctor Odyssey Episode 15.
In the fifteenth episode of Doctor Odyssey, Max was offered a mission tailor-made for him, yet his decision reveals an aspect of his character that the show should delve into further. Joshua Jackson’s Dr. Max Bankman is one of the main characters in Doctor Odyssey, working alongside other medical professionals like Avery Morgan (played by Phillipa Soo) and Tristan Silva (Sean Teale). The ship’s captain, Robert Massey, portrayed by Don Johnson, also forms part of the crew. Along with numerous dedicated individuals onboard the ship Odyssey, they confront bizarre and challenging medical emergencies on the open sea.

Regrettably, the second season of “Doctor Odyssey” remains uncertain, leaving us unsure if the season 1 finale will also mark the end of the series. Given this situation, it’s crucial for “Doctor Odyssey” to make the most of its remaining time. Although episode 15 provided Max with a permanent position and an ending that seemed nicely wrapped up, his role in “Doctor Odyssey” is too significant for him to abandon just yet.

Doctor Odyssey Episode 15 Proved Max Could Help More People In A Hospital

His Job Interview Unexpectedly Turned Into A Practical

The main events unfold on Doctor Odyssey’s lavish cruise ship most of the time, but occasionally the medical drama delves into a substantial storyline that happens on land or at least near the shore. In episode 15 of Doctor Odyssey, Max took this off-ship exploration a step further by traveling to his hometown for a job interview at a hospital managed by Rodney (played by Mike O’Malley). Max’s twin brother, Merrill, played by Joshua Jackson, shows concern over Max’s habit of leaving places without setting down roots, and this worry reaches its climax in the last scene.

Regardless of how congested and understaffed it appears when he visits, Max opts to remain on the Odyssey. At first glance, this decision might seem puzzling. Max could have contributed to improving the hospital and established himself in his hometown, impacting a larger community. However, as he confides in Avery, something more was required for him. His explanation, while slightly sentimental, hints that Avery is the missing element he’s been searching for. The discussion about Max’s decision, however, raises a more intriguing question concerning the crew of the Doctor Odyssey as a whole.

Doctor Odyssey Needs To Highlight Max & The Crew’s Dedication To Their Job

The Characters Can Be Taken Seriously And Still Be Entertaining

It’s not too much of a stretch to imagine Max choosing to remain on the cruise ship. To make this more convincing, Doctor Odyssey could delve deeper into the camaraderie among the entire crew. Characters such as Rosie (played by Jacqueline Toboni) and Spencer Monroe (Marcus Emanuel Mitchell) have taken on larger roles in the storyline, but their reasons for being part of the Odyssey team have yet to be fully explored. However, developing these characters’ depth doesn’t mean that the entertaining aspects of Doctor Odyssey need to be compromised.

In the series Doctor Odyssey, there’s a strong sense of campiness with its over-the-top theme weeks, yet the dedicated crew doesn’t need to be seen as a joke. Each individual who keeps the ship functioning is deeply committed to their role, and it would be fascinating to discover what drives them. Instead of just sticking to the soap opera storylines, Doctor Odyssey could delve deeper into its characters, providing richer content for future seasons and making up for the underutilization of its talented ensemble cast.
