By March 2025, numerous images resembling Studio Ghibli’s distinctive anime style were shared across social media, and these images were generated by the AI model known as ChatGPT.
Indeed, the popularity of this trend escalated to such an extent that Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, advised users to halt their usage, as he expressed concern that it was overwhelmingly taxing their company’s GPUs, causing them to malfunction or “melt”.
While the visual content certainly garnered attention, it might be argued that the debate sparked by this trend was equally significant. Enthusiasts of AI applauded ChatGPT’s image-generating abilities, whereas others expressed concerns about potential implications for the artistic realm in general.
Indeed, various key players in the anime community voiced their opposition to the ChatGPT Ghibli trend, including Megumi Ishitani, the director of One Piece, who expressed her distress about it.
For the past 24 hours, OpenAI has stunned the AI community by unveiling 40 stunning image generation capabilities. Here are 14 of the most awe-inspiring examples (all AI-created):

Japanese government debates ChatGPT Ghibli craze
Around four weeks ago, this matter has escalated significantly enough to be brought before Japan’s judicial system and debated during a meeting of the Cabinet Committee in the House of Representatives on April 16th.
Masato Imai, a representative from Gifu Prefecture and a member of the Constitutional Democratic Party, raised the issue in discussion with Hirohika Nakahara, who serves as the Director-General for Japan’s Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology Strategy.
Imai wondered about the legality of a topic that’s been debated: creating AI-made images in the style of Studio Ghibli (which some call ‘Ghiblification’). He questioned if, based on current interpretations of the law, it could potentially be considered legal?
Essentially, Nakahara stated that the courts will make the final decision on this matter. If the issue boils down to shared style or ideas, it wouldn’t be considered copyright infringement. However, if AI-generated content appears similar to or is based on pre-existing copyrighted works, then there might be a case for copyright infringement.
Imai explained that while employing styles and concepts is permissible, passing off an AI-created image as “Studio Ghibli itself” would be illegal.

Fundamentally, it boils down to determining if the Ghibli-like pictures generated by AI language learners such as ChatGPT potentially violate the studio’s copyright rights.
Currently, the Japanese government hasn’t initiated any direct legal actions against ChatGPT due to the social media buzz surrounding its image-generating capabilities. However, the mere mention of it during political discussions is noteworthy in itself.
Although ChatGPT is experiencing a significant rise in popularity due to the recent Ghibli fad, it’s important to note that OpenAI isn’t currently reaping profits from it. In an exclusive conversation with TopMob, AI specialists have suggested that the company could be spending a substantial amount of money due to this.
