According to Marvelous Games, game cards for Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma intended for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 can still be played on the original Nintendo Switch model as well.
On the FAQ page for Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma’s official website, Marvelous Games clarified that the upcoming Switch 2 edition of the game comes as a 64GB red game card. This card contains both the complete game and the upgrade pack. Interestingly, Marvelous Games added that this Switch 2 card can also be used with the original Switch console. No matter which system the card is inserted into, the appropriate version of the game will automatically start playing.
It’s not certain if editions of game cards from other games apart from Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma can be used in the standard Nintendo Switch. However, it’s been confirmed by Nintendo that players can still access the original Switch versions of their games even after they upgrade.
TopMob has contacted Nintendo to inquire whether any first-party Switch 2 Edition games will be compatible with the initial version of the Switch as well.
It appears there was some misunderstanding as Switch 2 Edition games were initially believed to only include the base game along with a download for an upgrade pack. However, Nintendo has clarified that these editions contain the full game and upgrades on the cartridge itself. Consequently, the game cards designed for Switch 2 won’t work on the original Nintendo Switch due to the upgraded features specific to the Switch 2 model.
On Rune Factory: Guardian’s of Azuma’s Steam page, it mentions that the game requires 20GB of storage space. It’s plausible to assume that the 64GB game card contains both the original and Switch 2 versions of the game since one game card might potentially have room for both editions.
In the latest version of Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma for Switch 2, you’ll be spending $10 more than the original Switch edition. What you’ll get in return are improved resolution, smoother gameplay with faster frame rates, and the added convenience of Joy-Con 2 mouse functionality. The game is set to debut on May 30 for both Switch and PC platforms, and on June 5 specifically for Switch 2.
