Titus Welliver aspired to play the main character in “Bosch: Legacy,” but he considered it a remote possibility, so he kept his hopes in check. Later, he shared the story of how he landed the role and went on to portray it for ten satisfying seasons.

Though the spinoff of Ballard has a strong fanbase, there’s a positive aspect: it has been confirmed! Harry Bosch, portrayed brilliantly by Titus Welliver, has become one of his most memorable roles. In an interview, he shared his initial thoughts about landing the part, expressing concerns that he might be overlooked due to his eagerness. “I truly understand who [Harry Bosch] is, and I know how to portray him,” he stated. “However, with my years of experience in this industry, I didn’t want to desire it too much… I thought, ‘They’re probably going to approach every big-name Hollywood star they can find.’

Over a span of 35 years, Welliver has built an impressive film and TV career, with his portrayal of Silas Adams in Deadwood often being hailed as his breakthrough performance. He’s graced both leading and supporting roles in esteemed ensembles, making guest appearances on shows like Matlock, NYPD Blue, Murder One, NCIS, Prison Break, Monk, among others. “I had already accumulated a substantial body of work,” he clarified. “My dedication to the craft was never in question.” Interestingly, series creator Michael Connelly had wanted Welliver for the role from the beginning. He found out about it while filming Transformers: Age of Extinction.

In a chain of unexpected events, I found myself engaged in various tasks that took me across the country and eventually to Hong Kong, only to discover that the meetings I was supposed to attend were not taking place. Months later, my manager called me up and shared exciting news: “You’re going to meet with Michael Connelly,” he said. My first thought was, “Isn’t Bosch out of the picture?” He clarified, “They haven’t found Bosch yet. Michael Connelly has the authority to decide who plays Bosch, and they’ve been trying to arrange a meeting with you for all these months.

For seven seasons on Bosch, Welliver perfectly embodied the character, and then returned to the role for an additional three seasons in Bosch: Legacy. He shared that it was almost as if he became the character himself, landing the part due to a unique collaboration between him, Michael Connelly, and other producers. Unlike typical television productions, this show felt more like a collaborative work of art rather than just following standard procedures. The cinematography was exceptional, making it truly artistic, with nothing routine about it at all.
