Meet the New Generation of Wizards: Unveiling the ‘Harry Potter’ TV Show Cast

It’s almost time for a whole new generation of wizards and witches to be welcomed into Hogwarts.

The enchanting Harry Potter book series, penned by J.K. Rowling, which was later transformed into a blockbuster cinematic universe, is set to air on HBO as a brand-new television show. Each of the seven books – “Philosopher’s Stone”, “Chamber of Secrets”, “Prisoner of Azkaban”, “Goblet of Fire”, “Order of the Phoenix”, “Half-Blood Prince”, and “Deathly Hallows” – will be individually translated into one season for this TV adaptation.

Over 32,000 kids have tried out for the main part of Harry Potter, previously brought to life by Daniel Radcliffe on HBO. As of now, no actor has been selected for this role, but executive producer Mark Mylod mentioned that they’re watching around 500 to 1,000 audition videos daily. The identities of the new actors who will play Harry’s pals Ron Weasley (previously played by Rupert Grint) and Hermione Granger (portrayed by Emma Watson) remain undisclosed, but HBO has confirmed a few major roles in the production.

Notable cast members for this production include John Lithgow portraying Albus Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu stepping into the role of Severus Snape, Janet McTeer bringing Professor McGonagall to life, and Nick Frost as Hagrid. Additionally, Paul Whitehouse and Luke Thallon will be reoccurring as Argus Filch and Quirinus Quirrell, respectively.

In this setup, Francesca Gardiner takes on the roles of both showrunner and executive producer. Meanwhile, Mark Mylod has been assigned to direct multiple episodes while also serving as an executive producer.

Read below for an overview of the new cast and who they play.

    Albus Dumbledore (John Lithgow)

Original Actor: Richard Harris and Michael Gambon

At Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Albus Dumbledore – a highly influential sorcerer, the oldest teacher, and an early guide for Harry – serves as the Headmaster. Before the happenings in “Sorcerer’s Stone,” Dumbledore (alongside Minerva McGonagall) arranged for baby Harry to reside with the Dursleys at Privet Drive.

    Severus Snape (Paapa Essiedu)

    Original Actor: Alan Rickman

At Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Severus Snape serves as the Potions Master and the Head of Slytherin House. Initially, he is seen as an opponent to Harry Potter and his comrades. Snape tends to be aloof towards his students, especially those from Gryffindor House, and also appears distant towards many of his fellow teachers. Over time, Harry becomes suspicious that Snape might have connections with the dark wizard, Lord Voldemort.

    Minerva McGonagall (Janet McTeer)

    Original Actor: Maggie Smith

Minerva McGonagall, the leader of Gryffindor House in Hogwarts, serves as a transfiguration teacher and initially supports Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Interestingly, without Harry’s knowledge, McGonagall collaborated with Dumbledore to arrange for Harry to be raised by the Dursleys as an infant. Furthermore, she possesses the ability to transform into a cat whenever she desires, making her an animagus.

    Nick Frost (Rubeus Hagrid)

    Original Actor: Robbie Coltrane

Half-giant Hagrid serves as the caretaker of Hogwarts. It’s him who initially tells young Harry that he’s a wizard and maintains a strong bond with the boy, as well as Ron and Hermione, during their school years. Though Hagrid can be a bit clumsy at times, he has a deep affection for all living beings, overseeing everything from dragons to Hippogriffs.

    Paul Whitehouse (Argus Filch)

    Original Actor: David Bradley

At Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, there’s a caretaker named Argus Filch who doesn’t seem particularly interested in the students. Strictly adhering to rules, Filch often teams up with his feline companion, Mrs. Norris, on a mission to detect mischievous students. Known as a “squib,” Filch lacks magical abilities despite having wizard lineage.

    Luke Thallon (Quirinus Quirrell)

    Original Actor: Ian Hart

At Hogwarts, when Harry starts attending, Professor Quirinus Quirrell is already teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts, but he had previously taught Muggle Studies. Interestingly, before coming to Hogwarts, he embarked on a quest to find Voldemort, hoping to uncover secrets about this malevolent wizard. By the time Harry meets him, it becomes apparent that there’s much more to Professor Quirrell than initially appears.
