heads-up: What follows discloses key plot points from Matlock’s first season, episode 19 titled “Tricks of the Trade – Part Two.” Proceed with caution if you wish to preserve your surprise!
Yesterday marked the thrilling end to Season 1 of CBS’s “Matlock,” a captivating legal drama starring Kathy Bates. The season, consisting of 19 episodes, kept viewers on their toes with unexpected twists and turns. However, none were as shocking as the unmasking of the person who concealed the Wellbrexa documents. Throughout the series, there were several misleading clues, but it was ultimately Julian (played by Jason Ritter) who turned out to be the mastermind behind it all. Now, Jennie Snyder Urman, the show’s creator, executive producer, and showrunner, is sharing whether this revelation was part of the plan from the beginning or if someone else had been intended for the role.
Discussing post-finale interviews following Matlock’s last episode, “Tricks of the Trade – Part Two,” Urman went into detail with the media about the season finale and the shocking revelation. Initially, we were debating between Senior and Julian, but as the story unfolded, it became less clear who had concealed the documents. Many thought it might be Beau Bridges’ character Howard at first, but as the season progressed, it turned out not to be him. So, could Olympia (played by Skye P. Marshall) have been the culprit? According to Urman, that’s a no.
It was clear that it wouldn’t be Olympia, yet there were instances where she resembled Maddie significantly just before being unmasked. Upon further reflection, we concluded that the perpetrator would cause us immense distress to identify. Initially, Senior appeared to be the likely suspect due to his extensive control over the situation. However, it seemed that [Julian] orchestrated events in a way that inflicted maximum pain on many, which is ideal for creating drama, as Olympia put it, “He’s in charge of everything.
Learning that it was Julian who caused the unexpected turn of events truly took my breath away. The reason for this strong reaction stems from the fact that fans grew fond of him as the season unfolded. Initially, his tumultuous bond with Olympia left us uncertain about our feelings towards him. Yet, he somehow managed to regain our trust, a point that the creators highlight as the reason behind the immense shock when things took a turn for the worse.
“Julian may stumble at times, but his charm is undeniable due to Jason portraying him with such warmth, compassion, and sensitivity. Despite his occasional missteps, you find yourself cheering for him because of his efforts. It seems like it would be heart-wrenching if he continued in this role, as it would place Olympia in a challenging situation during Season 2.”
