The Star Wars Celebration event has commenced in Japan, with a significant highlight being the unveiling of a fresh movie installment in the sci-fi franchise. This upcoming production, titled “Starfighter,” will be helmed by Shawn Levy (famous for Deadpool and Wolverine) and will feature Ryan Gosling as its star. The announcement of this project was made during the panel discussion about The Mandalorian and Grogu, and it is slated for a release on May 31, 2027.
At present, we only have limited information, but Starfighter is slated for release five years following the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, with Ryan Gosling portraying an entirely novel character. It’s worth noting that Star Wars: Starfighter has no connection to the video game released in 2001 for PC, PS2, and Xbox, as of now. If you fancy revisiting it, you can find the game on digital platforms like Steam and GOG.

In this case, you can say that the key distinction lies in the background story, as the Starfighter game is set within the prequel trilogy, more precisely during the invasion of Naboo from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. Much like Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, Starfighter incorporated elements of arcade-style action and enabled players to pilot various spaceships.
In 2002, a follow-up titled “Jedi Starfighter” was launched, and it took place amidst the happenings of the second Star Wars prequel film, “Attack of the Clones.” Notably, these games belong to the Star Wars lore known as Legends, which is distinct from the continuity that Disney adopted after acquiring the Star Wars intellectual property several years ago.
Apart from the unveiling of the Starfighter movie, the inaugural day of Star Wars Celebration brought forth additional announcements. Previously known as a Sith lord, Maul will spearhead a new animated series titled after the final season of Clone Wars, which will trace his ascension in the criminal underworld. A glimpse into The Mandalorian and Grogu was also shown, along with the announcement of a second season for the documentary Light and Magic. Lastly, the second installment of Star Wars Outlaws’ expansion, A Pirate’s Fortune, is set to be released on May 15th.
