Jon Favreau, a key figure in the Star Wars franchise much like his role in the early Marvel Cinematic Universe, has been dishing out some fascinating backstage tidbits about the return of a Clone Wars character – Rotta, Jabba the Hutt’s son. Unlike the traditional image of Hutts as sluggish and overweight, Rotta is leaner and more muscular in live-action. Favreau’s upcoming project with Lucasfilm will be the live-action feature film extension of The Mandalorian. At Star Wars Celebration, Favreau shed light on why Rotta deviates from the usual Hutt image fans are accustomed to, being less of a lazy, overweight creature and more muscular instead.
According to ScreenRant, Favreau disclosed that when creating the live-action version of Rotta, the character’s new design was influenced by the comic book character of Grakkus – a particularly powerful Hutt, a type not previously seen in the franchise on screen. He stated:
Absolutely! [Laughs]… It seemed crucial for us to have an image since everyone…We certainly find inspiration from the Extended Universe and the Hutts are quite intriguing. They were touched upon in the past, such as Jabba and what we encountered during our childhood. However, with Filoni and animation, they delved deeper into their world. Additionally, various accompanying materials like comics, such as Grakkus, a powerful Hutt character, added to that exploration. I believe you’re referring to Grakkus, correct?
There are various forms of imagery in both traditional and animated realms, and as technology advances, it’s intriguing to experiment with creatures that were once impossible to depict. Compare the challenges faced during the original trilogy, requiring numerous puppeteers and complex construction, to the advancements made with CG in special editions, and more recently, shows like The Book of Boba Fett featuring digital twins. Overall, it’s an exciting exploration, especially for the big screen where you can’t find anything larger than a Hutt.
