Alice Rohrwacher to Preside Over Cannes Caméra d’Or Jury

Alice Rohrwacher, an Italian film director whose films “The Wonders,” “Happy as Lazzaro,” and “La Chimera” have all been contenders at Cannes, has been chosen to lead the jury for the Caméra d’Or prize at the Cannes Film Festival. This award is bestowed upon a debut work that appears in the official selection, as well as in the Critics’ Week and Directors’ Fortnight sections.

The first experiences hold a special place in our hearts and minds, as they often remain vividly etched in our memories,” Rohrwacher explained. “Just like stepping into an unknown room, sharing your first kiss with someone cherished, or setting foot on foreign soil – there’s a certain radiance that surrounds these moments, making them stand out in our recollections. Perhaps this is the reason why the most esteemed award for debut films is named Caméra d’Or?

As a dedicated cinephile, my long-standing relationship with the prestigious Cannes Film Festival began when my debut feature, the poignant coming-of-age drama “Heavenly Body” (originally titled “Corpo Celeste”), premiered at the Directors’ Fortnight in 2011. This remarkable film then graced the screens of esteemed festivals such as Sundance and New York, marking significant milestones in my cinematic journey.

In 2014, her second film titled “The Wonders” – which follows the life of a young girl on a bee farm and won the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes – was released. In 2018, another film by her called “Happy as Lazzaro,” a fantastical tale exploring Italy’s transition from rural to modern society, shared the award for best screenplay.

La Chimera,” featuring “The Crown” actor Josh O’Connor portraying a young British archaeologist, is seen as the third installment of a trilogy that includes its two preceding films. This trilogy is formed based on their shared narrative.

It was earlier mentioned that Juliette Binoche is set to lead the main jury, and Robert De Niro is scheduled to receive the prestigious Palme d’Or this year. The event will unfold from May 13 to May 24.
