Grew up in Oakland, but my roots trace back to Mississippi – a place I’ve often heard tales of from my uncle and grandpa. Their stories, coupled with the soulful tunes we loved, were the seeds that eventually blossomed into the movie concept I brought to life.

At a special event where we unveiled the film’s trailer earlier this year, Coogler shared: “This project is deeply personal for me. It’s intriguing because with every piece I create, it becomes the most intimate work I’ve ever produced. And that was certainly true this time around.

In my case, I never met my paternal grandfather as he passed away before I was born. Instead, we lived in a house that he constructed in Oakland following his relocation to California. Remarkably, I developed an exceptionally strong bond with my Uncle James, which served as the foundation for this story. Essentially, it’s about… the tale sprouted from my unique connection with him.

He was constantly immersed in blues tunes, and whenever he did, he’d reminisce about Mississippi. His influence on me has been deep and meaningful. This movie allowed me an opportunity to delve into my own family history, which has been a deeply fulfilling experience.

As a gamer, I found this movie to be a journey back to an era and location that my family rarely discusses. Ryan Coogler elaborates that it’s largely due to the complex emotions tied to our past. This film takes us there… revealing the complete human side of these characters.

The idea behind it was, ‘Our grandparents were much like us.’ This made everything feel contemporary and immersive. I believed that the IMAX format, along with the Super Panavision format, and the stunning landscape, helped to emphasize this perspective. I think people are seeking an experience they can fully immerse themselves in.
