Discord’s New Age Verification: Scan Your Face or ID?

As a gamer, I’ve recently learned that Discord is giving a whirl at a fresh feature. This feature might ask us to provide a selfie scan or share an image of our ID to gain entry to mature content.

From the time it debuted in 2015, Discord has garnered widespread popularity as an instant messaging platform, be it for gaming groups or various online communities. While it offers numerous beneficial features, it’s important to note that it also faces issues concerning underage users.

Keeping this thought in focus, our platform is now introducing an age verification tool, accessible at present in the United Kingdom and Australia.

Discord referred to this process as a ‘trial,’ detailing that it’s meant to aid users in controlling “filters for content” and making “potentially sensitive material” less visible.

Discord’s age verification feature explained

The feature that checks age ensures that people who haven’t been confirmed as being of legal age can’t view adult or explicit content.

In some instances within the application, content might be marked using a protective filter for sensitive media. As explained on Discord’s page, when users come across such content, they may initially need to confirm their age category before proceeding. They’ll then have two choices to select from in order to gain access to this specific content.

In the first scenario, granting the app permission to use your device’s camera will enable it to capture a facial image for submission. Alternatively, under the second option, users must follow the instructions and submit a crisp image of their identification document.

After setting it up, the user will get a confirmation message about their age group straight to their account.

Sharing private details can understandably make you feel apprehensive. Yet, as stated by Discord, the confidential data that users provide during their chosen age verification process will be utilized solely for that specific instance. Crucially, neither Discord nor its partner company retain this information after use.

They told us that for facial recognition, the method their supplier employs processes data directly on your device, so no biometric details are gathered during scanning. Regarding ID verification, they clarified that the ID scan gets erased immediately once it’s verified.

It’s also important to mention that a user might face account suspension if they are not old enough according to the age requirement. However, if their account has been wrongly suspended, they can make an appeal.
