The franchise stands out distinctly within its genre due to its remarkable longevity, stemming from its connection to the Japanese Super Sentai series. Given its origins, one might not expect it to thrive as much as it has; yet, it did and evolved into a series brimming with intricate lore, showcased across various media formats. Despite this, television remains its original and most effective platform, where the rangers first emerged and where some of the franchise’s strongest weapons and artifacts were conceived.
Over the years, it’s not just the Power Coins and Quasar Sabers that have left an impression; there are other remarkable artifacts that have granted the rebellious teens an edge in combat. One particularly noteworthy item emerged following Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, known as the Zeo crystal. This potent object was divided into five pieces and concealed across different eras to ensure its safety. However, when the rangers retrieved them, they received a surge in power. Despite having no reason to abandon the crystals, they chose to do so, leaving many wondering about their fate ever since.
The Zeo Crystal is a Powerful Tool
The Crystal is Likely Older Than Time Itself
The enigmatic Zeo Crystal, an artifact steeped in mystery, is said to possess immense power that hints at its connection to the universe’s inception. While its origins remain elusive, it’s known that it originated from Triforia before finding its way to Earth. One of its most striking features is its growth in power over time. However, when it was divided, the power didn’t diminish but was instead bestowed upon the rangers in a new form. By tapping into this energy, they transformed into the Zeo Rangers, a team powerful enough to confront the Machine Empire. Yet, acquiring the power was just the beginning of their journey.
As a devoted fan, I’d say before the crystal era, it was the Power Coins that fueled the strength of our beloved rangers. With Billy Cranston’s genius and technological prowess, he managed to unleash the coins’ full potential. However, their power was limited, and it rarely came into play except in a handful of Power Rangers crossover episodes.
Fast forward, the Zeo Crystals were not like the Power Coins that could run out or be shattered. Instead, they simply fell out of use. Yet, just like the Power Coins, these crystals still held power and made occasional appearances in later series, being utilized by other ranger teams.
Essentially, the strength of the Zeo Crystal could be determined by the energy sources that preceded and succeeded it, such as the SPD morphers or the Cosmic Fury morphers. The team had multiple methods to amass power, but it was usually limited in supply. They often had to forfeit the power for a greater purpose or lose the power source itself, like when Andros had to eliminate Zordon. However, despite these hardships, the Zeo Crystal persisted. Sadly, it continued to exist without being utilized and was eventually replaced by a significantly weaker energy source.
The Zeo Crystal’s Disappearance is Still Discussed
The Zeo Crystal Power Was Replaced With the Turbo Morphers
When Power Rangers Zeo concluded, it signified a significant win for the Power Rangers. Yet, in Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie, a fresh adversary named Divatox emerged. Although not as formidable as Lord Zedd or the Machine Empire, she posed a real threat. The movie showcased that they were still utilizing Zeonizers to morph, with this method being crucial when Kat managed to survive a perilous fall in the jungle. However, as the narrative unfolded, Zordon declared that the crystals would no longer aid them, and Turbo morphers were introduced instead. These new morphers had an uncertain origin and were equipped with a fresh fleet of zords for the team to employ.
Initially, it appeared typical for a fresh season to bring about new abilities and costumes. Yet, with the Zeo Crystal, one can’t help but wonder why anyone would seek power upgrades when its strength grows over time. In terms of Power Rangers Turbo, this series was significantly more over-the-top than its predecessor (if that were even imaginable). From the villains to the plotlines, this season ranked among the weakest in the Power Rangers series. Despite this, it retains a certain appeal and has endured the test of time, serving as a transition from the Zeo series to Power Rangers in Space. However, the fate of the Zeo Crystal after the introduction of a new season was rarely questioned, either due to negative reaction or the nature of the franchise.
Despite the progression of time, the enigma surrounding the Zeo Crystal has persisted, leaving fans puzzled as to whether there was ever a valid justification for its initial abandonment. Realistically, it might have been due to a lack of Super Sentai episodes to adapt, necessitating the advancement of the storyline. However, another possibility is that the crystal was utilized to empower the Turbo morphers. The decision to discard the crystal entirely has proven to be one of the most regrettable moves in Power Rangers. Even today, as fans witness a Zeo Ranger in action during a crossover event, it only deepens the mystery and hints at unexplored aspects of the lore. Still, numerous theories abound regarding the reasons behind its absence and the continued presence of the Zeo Crystal within the franchise.
There’s One Theory Why the Zeo Crystal Was Retired
Fans Still Hypothesize What Happened to the Zeo Crystal
Enthusiasts of Power Rangers often ponder the fate of the Zeo Crystal and its power, given that at this stage, it might well rank among the most potent artifacts in the entire series. However, a possible explanation for its disappearance has surfaced. Reportedly, the theory goes that the crystals were taken due to their most impressive feature – as they grew more powerful over time, they would have posed a threat to ordinary humans wielding them.
It seems that even Jason found the strength of the Gold Zeo Ranger hard to maintain for extended periods, which may be why he had to relinquish it. This implies that the Zeonizers might have been designed with a time limit, though this was never explicitly shown on screen. As such, the Turbo morphers were likely prepared as backup options, since continuous use of the Zeo Crystals could potentially have fatal consequences for the rangers due to their immense power. This also helps explain how some Zeo Rangers appeared in different crossovers over time, with Tommy’s return as Zeo Ranger 5 being one of the most memorable examples.
It seems plausible that the Zeo Rangers were called into action only when necessary. Interestingly, even Rocky, without a Turbo morpher, retained his zeonizer and continued to serve as a red Power Ranger in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Whether it’s the Legendary Battle or Tommy utilizing the Master Morpher, it suggests that the Zeo Crystal is likely still active, but mainly for significant situations. Otherwise, prolonged use of it might pose danger to any ranger.
Although the Zeo Crystal might not be a central element in the current storyline of Power Rangers, it stands as a symbol of the deep affection fans have for the Zeo season. The Power Rangers Zeo series marked a significant milestone by introducing new suits and paving the way for a continuous trend that has become synonymous with the show. While other platforms have expanded upon it, it’s these shows that continue to captivate audiences. However, with Power Rangers Zeo, they demonstrate that things were more robust than ever before. The exact nature of the Zeo Crystal may remain unknown, but this doesn’t diminish its value. The Zeo Crystal is a remarkable artifact in the Power Rangers universe and one that has played a crucial role in keeping the franchise thriving. Now, the enigma surrounding it can serve to keep its legacy alive as well.
