Daredevil: Born Again Needs Kilgrave to Raise the Stakes!

In the climactic and heart-wrenching finale of Daredevil: Born Again, while the first season skillfully laid the groundwork for a confrontation between Matt Murdock and Kingpin in the second season, it’s crucial to introduce Marvel’s scariest antagonist to significantly escalate the tension.

The Daredevil: Born Again series was exceptionally well-crafted, yet at times it delved into somber and melancholic tones. The narrative commenced with the tragic demise of a much-adored character, culminating in another cherished figure being jailed (though perhaps not for an extended period).

In the last installment, Kingpin carried out the most gruesome murder ever witnessed within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, leaving him firmly in control; a tyrant wielding power over New York City with an unyielding grip.

Speaking as an avid fan, that plotline certainly sets the stage for a fierce conflict between Kingpin’s troops and the group of heroes that Daredevil manages to rally to his cause. However, what could truly elevate Season 2 is the inclusion of Marvel’s most captivating antagonist.

Why Kilgrave needs to show up in Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again

In the initial season of Jessica Jones, Kilgrave made his first appearance – prior to his alliance with Daredevil and other members of The Defenders. It soon became evident that Kilgrave stood out as an extraordinary antagonist, unique among Marvel Cinematic Universe villains.

David Tennant skillfully portrays Kilgrave, a character who wields the power of mind control. Instead of using this ability for altruistic purposes, he exploits it for personal satisfaction and advantage. Moreover, Kilgrave employs his power to inflict pain upon others, sometimes pushing them to take their own lives or commit crimes at his behest.

The maliciousness of Kilgrave becomes most apparent through his actions towards Jessica Jones. Upon seeing her on the street, he is instantly attracted and swiftly takes control over her, compelling her to carry out his will for several months without fail.

Ultimately, she manages to free herself from slavery, but Kilgrave’s growing fixation on her results in harm to her companions, as well as causing distress and pain directly to Jessica.

His malevolent nature and the fact that he poses a formidable adversary are undeniable, yet it’s his twisted sense of humor, coupled with a tragic background of being subjected to experiments as a child, that keeps Kilgrave an intriguing and captivating antagonist. This complex character could have continued to wreak havoc in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Kilgrave is not just a ruthless enemy; he’s also endlessly fascinating. His dark humor, stemming from his traumatic childhood where he was used as a test subject, gives him an allure that could have led to endless chaos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Regrettably, his character met a tragic end at the close of Jessica Jones Season 1, when she ended his life by snapping his neck in the finale. However, it’s not uncommon for characters to have a second chance at life in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and he indeed reappeared, albeit in hallucinations form, during Seasons 2 and 3.

David Tennant wants to bring Kilgrave back

To make the second season of “Born Again” compelling for Marvel, it’s crucial to significantly strengthen Daredevil’s adversary, finding a foe more formidable than Kingpin, thus placing Matt Murdock in an incredibly challenging position.

If the Daredevil team were considering a shift in that direction, David Tennant has expressed interest in reprising his role. On the Off Menu podcast, he mentioned, “The challenge with that character lies in his uniqueness and the difficulty of writing for him because it’s tough to generate conflict around him since everything he does is already resolved.

In terms of narration, it seems like there’s only one tale to be shared, but I’d be thrilled if someone felt inspired to attempt a sequel.

Later on, he discusses the idea that death holds no significance within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as one can simply traverse through a portal. Intriguingly, Tennant also throws out potential abilities that Kilgrave might acquire in the future.

Now that David Tennant has joined the cast, and Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again commences filming this year with a planned 2026 launch, the responsibility lies with Marvel to deliver.
