Playdate Season 2 Lineup Includes New Game From Into The Breach Devs

During a recent live broadcast, Panic unveiled the preliminary games for Playdate Season 2, and one of them is Fulcrum Defender, developed by Subset Games – the team behind Into the Breach and FTL: Faster Than Light. This arcade-style action game allows you to manipulate a turret using the Playdate’s crank, deflecting incoming projectiles before they reach the center of your screen.

In our review of Into the Breach, we labeled it as a “spotless and practical tactical gem.” It was honored with the BAFTA for best original game, and also received the award for “best strategy game” at The Game Awards 2018. Similarly, FTL, which debuted in 2012, was widely praised for its design and music. However, during a live stream, Subset Games’ Justin Ma mentioned that they hadn’t initially aimed to produce another hit. Interestingly enough, they had no intention of releasing Fulcrum Defender for some time.

Ma explained, “I’ve been creating these games more as a means of personal healing.” Over the past few years, she has battled long-term effects of COVID-19. However, she wished to demonstrate to herself that she could still produce games even in her present condition.

11 other games join Fulcrum in the Playdate Season 2 lineup.

  • Dig Dig Dino! (Dom2D and Fayer)
  • Taria and Como (Popseed Studio Inc and JuVee Productions)
  • Shadowgate PD (Pixel Ghost)
  • Black Hole Havoc (Cosmic Bros)
  • CatchaDiablos (Amano)
