In the second season of “The Last of Us,” we find ourselves leaping ahead through time, hinting at looming turmoil in the Wyoming sanctuary. This impending danger materializes as fresh growths and an advancement of a species that were once merely monsters. These creatures have evolved to not only scuttle around in the darkness but also strategize and lay traps, making them far more formidable adversaries.
In this fresh scenario, these novel infected entities present a fresh hazard to tackle, which Ellie has previously shared with Tommy and the council following an encounter on the road. Yet, as Ellie endeavors to reestablish some semblance of normality within the camp, she encounters a new predicament that potentially poses a significant risk to the colony’s safety.
The Last of Us Season 2 Introduces Homophobia
Seth Calls Ellie and Dina a Nasty Remark
In Season 2, Episode 1, titled “Future Days,” Ellie and another character named Dina share a dance at a winter gathering. They participate in joint activities and outings. However, Dina remains unaware that Ellie harbors romantic feelings towards her, a misunderstanding compounded by Dina’s past relationship with Jesse.
Later on the dance floor, they find themselves caught up in a moment, sharing a kiss. This act of affection is witnessed by everyone present, causing quite a stir. Among the spectators is a character named Seth, who responds to this display of love with a derogatory slur against homosexuality.
This incident serves as a shocking reminder of latent biases in their society. Some might try to dismiss his words as the result of alcohol, while others view them as an accurate reflection of his true character. It’s a grim moment that underscores the presence of prejudice hidden within their community.

From his response alone, it’s clear that Seth appears to have discomfort towards individuals who identify as queer. This intolerance seems to drive him to act negatively. Ellie reacts angrily at Joel for the violence, while Seth is forced to retreat. She feels she doesn’t require protection. However, one can understand why Joel would intervene on her behalf, given his advocacy for visibility and acceptance of others. It’s likely that various religious perspectives will exist within this Jackson community. However, unity, love, collaboration, empathy are vital in constructing a new, inclusive society for the future.
Maria (Joel’s sister-in-law) encourages Joel and Tommy to keep growing their community and accepting refugees because she believes they should focus on unity rather than dwelling on differences, as it’s more productive to be hopeful and optimistic. However, her tolerance could potentially undermine the egalitarian and inclusive society Maria envisions for the colony, as bigotry may deter queer individuals from coming out and may drive others away if they encounter intolerance from people like Seth. In the game that the show is based on, Seth attempted to make amends by offering Ellie food from his bar, but she declined due to his prejudice against outsiders.
Ellie was unyielding and consistently stood firm. She made sure to include this scene as a reminder that humanity continues to move forward. Despite their concern for other beings, human prejudices and tendencies persist beneath the surface. Since the show incorporates changes from the original game, this provides numerous opportunities for imaginative storytelling to address real-world intolerance towards queer individuals.
Why Seth’s Bigotry Could Cause Trouble For Joel & Ellie’s Haven
The Last of Us’ Jackson Camp Could Be Divided for the Monsters or Abby’s Raid
In this sanctuary, many individuals arm themselves and perform their duty shifts. It’s about pitching in and contributing to the cause of advancement. However, with the threat of the tendrils invading the haven’s plumbing systems, it’s likely that people will become infected and turn aggressive. When the ensuing chaos breaks out, it’s a dog-eat-dog world. If Seth manages to abandon others for monsters to prey upon, or eliminates others to reduce the number of survivors who would compete for resources like food and water later on, it won’t be hard to imagine him targeting those he dislikes. The residents of the Jackson community, being queer individuals, might find themselves in his crosshairs.
If Seth has supporters backing his limited perspective, it might escalate the situation to a point where Joel, Ellie, or Dina may feel compelled to take action. They value tranquility and unity in the community and don’t wish to see it disintegrate. They remain optimistic about a brighter tomorrow but for their own survival, they must act. Joel is a protective father who wishes the best for his adopted daughter, while Ellie, Dina, and others seek to preserve their identities, individuality, and new relationships.
It seems like a no-win situation for Ellie. Regardless of whether the monsters attack or not, there’s going to be a conversation. The timing couldn’t be worse, as her crew is out for revenge against Joel due to the Fireflies he killed. Ellie must stay focused, but Seth might draw Dina and Ellie’s attention away. It will be intriguing to observe how the show portrays Seth and the repercussions of his actions.
In the game I follow, there was a character named Lev who identified as transgender, working alongside Abby. Meanwhile, in Season 1 of Last of Us, a queer individual resided within their home. The series, Last of Us, has been promoting representation for those identifying as queer, leaving fans eager for the resolution regarding Seth’s behavior. I can only hope that this doesn’t create problems for the colony when the creatures or Abby’s militia arrive. Ultimately, it’s crucial to remember that our safe haven is stronger united and should not be needlessly divided.
New episodes of The Last of Us premiere every Sunday at 9 PM ET on HBO.
