‘Clueless’ Is Getting a TV Sequel Starring Alicia Silverstone

Let’s acknowledge that the movie Clueless remains an unsurpassed ’90s masterpiece, a gem that stands untouchable and impervious to enhancement.

These days, it’s rare for an IP (Intellectual Property) like a movie or TV show to remain untouched. And that’s why we hear rumblings from Variety that Peacock is currently working on a sequel series for the classic film “Clueless” – and yes, this would indeed be a sequel series. Remarkably, Alicia Silverstone, who originally played Cher in the movie, has signed on to reprise her role in this new project.

The report states that there are no specifics about the storyline, except that the series will act as a sequel to the iconic movie, and this is distinct from another proposed Clueless project that was presented to Peacock five years back, featuring a separate creative team.

The proposed show, known as “Clueless,” was once characterized as a blend of “Mean Girls,” “Riverdale,” and a Lizzo music video. It took place in high school and served as a revival, focusing on the storyline of “what transpires when the reigning High School Queen (Cher) vanishes, and her longtime second-in-command (Dionne) takes over Cher’s empty Air Jordans.

If another “Clueless” revival takes place, it won’t mark the initial TV series based on the movie. Following the massive cultural impact of the first film in 1995, it was swiftly transformed into a television show, with Rachel Blanchard stepping into Alicia Silverstone’s role as Cher. This series essentially extended the fundamental concept from the film for three seasons on ABC and UPN.

For her part, Silverstone did reprise the role of Cher recently … in a Super Bowl ad.

2023 saw the endorsement of that ad, with Silverstone stating that a “Clueless” sequel never materialized due to the fact that director Amy Heckerling had no intention of making one.

She was questioned numerous times, but she always declined. To her, there was a sense of enchantment in our actions,” she concluded.

Regardless if there’s magic involved or not, Variety states that Heckerling serves as an executive producer for the upcoming Clueless sequel series.

The 10 Best Action Movies of the Last 10 Years (2015-2024)

10. Avengement (2019)

Scott Adkins stands out as the actor with the most unpolished action roles in movies during the past 15 years. He’s graced big-budget Hollywood productions (like playing one of Mads Mikkelsen’s henchmen in Doctor Strange) but has primarily worked on direct-to-video and now direct-to-streaming action films. One of the best representations of his straightforward, high-impact acting style can be found in the film Avengement. In this movie, Adkins, teaming up with frequent collaborator director Jesse V. Johnson, portrays a criminal seeking vengeance against his own brother after escaping prison. The title might seem a bit silly, but make no mistake: This is a gritty and intense little film.

9. The Fall Guy (2024)

Just like an outdated muscle car with faulty brakes, “The Fall Guy” gains momentum swiftly and seldom slows down. Its most thrilling scenes radiate the same captivating vitality as a classic Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland musical where they declare, “Let’s put on a show!”. It’s so heartwarmingly enamored with the magic of movies that it makes you yearn to create your own film or simply enjoy one.

However, calling it “movie magic” is somewhat deceptive. For the viewers, when a movie captivates as effectively as “The Fall Guy”, it seems magical. For the filmmakers, crafting such magic involves a mix of illusion and grueling effort, much of which is attributed to the unsung heroes below-the-line whom “The Fall Guy” honors. At one juncture, Emily Blunt’s character Jody Moreno tells Ryan Gosling’s stuntman Colt Seavers that she aims for their action sequences to embody the concept “How far would you go for the love of one?” If “the one” represents the intoxicating elation of exceptional cinema, then this is the driving force behind this highly entertaining film.

8. Rebel Ridge (2024)

In 2024, Aaron Pierre was expected to be the center of attention in the movie industry due to his compelling portrayal of an honest Marine entangled with dishonest cops in “Rebel Ridge”. However, despite being one of twelve new movies on Netflix in September of that year, it didn’t seem like he garnered much buzz. That doesn’t mean Pierre wasn’t exceptional or that Jeremy Saulnier, the talented director behind “Blue Ruin” and “Green Room”, didn’t deliver another top-notch action film. This movie was similar to “First Blood”, but with a contemporary twist. Unlike typical action films, the hero, a Marine martial arts instructor falsely accused by a corrupt police chief, tries to find peaceful resolutions whenever possible, although he doesn’t always succeed. Fortunately for the viewers, he isn’t entirely successful either!

7. John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum (2019)

In the incredible film “John Wick: Chapter 3,” every moment is captivating, but the first 40 minutes, featuring Keanu Reeves’ unstoppable assassin fleeing New York City and literally killing a man with a book, might be the most intense and exhilarating display of raw cinema from the past ten years. John Wick, though you may have been excommunicated, you’ve left an indelible mark on my heart, and I can’t wait to see your return, whether it’s on the big screen or this list.

6. Mission: Impossible — Fallout (2018)

Discussing the intricate and daring storylines and death-defying stunts of Mission: Impossible – Fallout, which surpassed even its predecessor Rogue Nation in terms of insanity, is just the surface level appeal. What truly sets this movie apart is the unwavering dedication of Tom Cruise, a rare beacon of genuine enthusiasm in today’s often cynical entertainment landscape.

Cruise could easily have relied on stuntmen or digital effects to perform his actions, but he chooses not to because he genuinely believes in his films and is committed to satisfying the audience. This unyielding passion permeates every scene of this unapologetically enjoyable – and unashamedly sincere – action flick. For instance, Cruise sustained a broken ankle while performing one stunt, yet he completed the shot and it was included in the final film.

This example encapsulates the spirit of Tom Cruise and Mission: Impossible – Fallout: an artist who pushes boundaries and takes risks for the love of his craft and the pleasure of his fans.

5. Bad Black (2016)

Despite the raw, exhilarating, and chaotic nature of the action film “Bad Black” from Uganda, it’s not a comedic disaster like Tommy Wiseau’s work. Instead, it feels more like a rush of adrenaline directly to your heart. Director Nabwana I.G.G. kicks off with an epic 10-minute chase and gunfight through the streets of Wakaliga, and the action hardly slows down for the next hour. The editing is fast-paced yet clear, the stunts are remarkably athletic, the depiction of life in Uganda is intriguing, and the joy that everyone brings to the project is utterly contagious. Essentially, it’s not a movie that’s so bad it’s good – it’s so good it’s “Bad Black”.

4. John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)

The John Wick series might’ve wrapped up its storyline in Chapter 4, or it may not have; either way, the movie reached its peak – quite literally so, as the climax took place on a massive stairwell leading to Paris’ Sacré-Cœur church where Keanu Reeves’ character John Wick fought his way to the top. With an impressive runtime of three hours and more than enough breathtaking action scenes for three films, John Wick: Chapter 4 sees its title character embarking on a global journey in search of a means to finally put an end to his relentless war against the High Table. Reeves delivers another remarkable performance as the enigmatic and emotional anti-hero, this time teaming up with a stellar cast of action stars including Scott Adkins, Laurence Fishburne, Hiroyuki Sanada, Shamier Anderson, and particularly Donnie Yen as the blind swordsman/assassin Caine. It’s hard to imagine how Reeves and director Chad Stahelski could surpass this masterpiece, but I would be thrilled to watch them attempt it again.

3. Top Gun: Maverick (2022)

In today’s era, one might find it challenging to envision a less necessary movie than a follow-up to “Top Gun” in the 2020s. However, against all odds, director Joseph Kosinski and star/producer Tom Cruise demonstrated an incredible determination and dedication to traditional cinematic artistry, managing to create a “Top Gun” sequel that was not just action-packed and engaging, but surprisingly resonant with our contemporary world – even if not directly political, it certainly spoke to the demand for visually stunning imagery that can only be appreciated on a large screen. In today’s context, such a perspective might indeed be considered unconventional or daring.

2. RRR (2022)

This film hailing from India, lasting three hours, overwhelms your brain’s pleasure centers with a blend of grand spectacle, romance, music, and thrilling action scenes. In essence, it could be compared to a modern South Asian adaptation of an old-school John Woo action movie, featuring two exceptionally powerful characters – one being Bheem (N.T. Rama Rao Jr.), a Gond tribe warrior, and the other, Rama (Ram Charan), a member of the British Empire’s military forces. While in Delhi, Bheem searches for a kidnapped girl, and Rama is tasked with finding the mystery man who seeks her. Despite being on opposing sides of the law, a coincidental accident transforms them into unexpected allies. This film, titled RRR, leaves no stone unturned in its pursuit of audience enjoyment, and the seamless fusion of combat and dance is truly remarkable.

1. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

The film “Mad Max: Fury Road” is hailed as the best car chase movie of the past decade and even the century. Its action sequences are impressive, but what truly stands out is its profound spiritual and Biblical themes. It’s essentially a journey from Sodom and Gomorrah towards a new Eden, led by Charlize Theron’s character Imperator Furiosa, who is already an icon in the film world. Tom Hardy’s character Max serves as their guide through the desert, helping them find safety, but he himself cannot share in their sanctuary. George Miller’s masterpiece of chaos demonstrates that action movies can be both exciting and intelligent. If someone tries to argue otherwise, you should look them straight in the eye and say, “That’s absurd.
