Actor Alicia Silverstone is set to return as character Cher Horowitz in a new “Clueless” series on Peacock, according to our sources.
The series is presently being worked on, with specific storyline particulars remaining confidential, except that it will be a continuation of the beloved movie.
Josh Schwartz, Stephanie Savage, and Jordan Weiss are set to work together on writing. All three will take up executive producer roles, with Schwartz and Savage working under their production company, Fake Empire. Silverstone is not only starring but also serving as an executive producer. Amy Heckerling, the original writer and director of the film, and Robert Lawrence, the film’s producer, are also on board as executive producers. The project will be produced by CBS Studios in collaboration with Universal Television.
This new “Clueless” series currently in development is distinct from the one initially planned at Peacock in 2020 that didn’t materialize. The previous project, helmed by a different creative team, was characterized as a mystery series where Cher was absent and instead centered around her best friend, Dionne.
The movie “Clueless,” which first appeared in 1995, is inspired by the Jane Austen novel “Emma.” Amber Marshall (Alicia Silverstone), Paul Rudd, Stacey Dash, Brittany Murphy, Donald Faison, Breckin Meyer, and Dan Hedaya were among the stars of this production. The series ran on ABC and later UPN from 1996 to 1999 for a total of three seasons. Rachel Blanchard portrayed Cher in the TV adaptation.
Silverstone has taken on the character of Cher more than once in recent years, most notably in a Super Bowl ad for Rakuten in 2023. This role catapulted her to movie fame and she went on to star in films like “Batman & Robin,” “Blast from the Past,” and “Beauty Shop.” In more recent times, Silverstone has appeared on TV shows such as “American Horror Stories,” “The Baby-Sitters Club,” and “American Woman.” Upcoming projects featuring Silverstone include the Yorgos Lanthimos film “Bugonia” and the Acorn TV series “Irish Blood,” where she also serves as a producer.
Or, in a shorter version:
In the past few years, Silverstone has reprised her role as Cher several times, most notably in a Super Bowl ad for Rakuten in 2023. She’s known for films like “Batman & Robin,” and recent TV appearances include shows like “American Horror Stories” and “The Baby-Sitters Club.” Upcoming projects include the Yorgos Lanthimos film “Bugonia” and the Acorn TV series “Irish Blood,” where Silverstone is also a producer.
She is repped by UTA, Untitled Entertainment, and Gang Tyre.
Schwartz and Savage are primarily recognized for their collaboration in creating the popular series “Gossip Girl” and overseeing its recent reboot at Max. They’ve also worked on shows like “Looking for Alaska,” “The OC,” “Runaways,” “Hart of Dixie,” the revival of “Dynasty,” and “Nancy Drew.” Most recently, they co-created the Apple TV+ drama “City on Fire,” which is adapted from Garth Risk Hallberg’s novel by the same name.
They are repped by WME and McKuin Frankel Whitehead.
Recently, Weiss penned the screenplay for the upcoming sequel “Another Freaky Friday,” starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis in their original roles from the 2003 movie. Moreover, she developed the Hulu series “Dollface” and produced and directed the Max original film titled “Sweethearts.
She is repped by UTA, Mosaic, and Felker Toczek.
In the latest instance, Silverstone is back in “Clueless,” demonstrating the trend of actors revisiting their famous ’90s characters for streaming series. Similar occurrences include Sarah Michelle Gellar’s portrayal of Buffy once more in a Hulu revival pilot and the majority of the “Malcolm in the Middle” cast joining forces on Disney+.
