Ahead Of Official Oblivion Remastered Release, Skyblivion Mod Dev Says It’s A “Win-Win”

The person responsible for directing the impressive total conversion mod known as Skyblivion, which aims to recreate 2006’s The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion using a more contemporary engine from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, views the potential release of an official Oblivion Remastered in 2025 as a “double victory” for those who crave more of the Oblivion experience.

Since 2012, the mod project Skyblivion has been under development by TESRenewal, and they recently announced in February that it would be released in 2025. Meanwhile, there have been rumors of an official Oblivion Remaster since 2023, when the game was mentioned in court documents related to Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard. More recently, leaked screenshots of Oblivion Remastered have surfaced online, hinting at a forthcoming release.

The project manager of Rebelzize, who’s leading Skyblivion, appears unfazed about the potential abundance of Oblivion in 2025. In a recent post on X, they expressed, “the genuine remake is the friendships we formed throughout the process.” They later elaborated on their perspective.

Rebelzize clarified, regarding the anticipated release of the official Oblivion Remastered this year, “Nothing alters my stance on this; it’s a project I’ve always been passionate about and will remain so until its conclusion. This benefits the community immensely as they get double the Oblivion experience this year. I hold no grudge against those who are remastering the game, only affection.

Although both the official update and the mod share the common goal of essentially recreating Oblivion, they seem to be taking distinct paths in their execution. Unlike the original remaster, Skyblivion intends to rebuild Oblivion using Skyrim’s engine, while maintaining its original aesthetic and gameplay. However, it promises to offer additional content, including new quests, creatures, and expanded cities. Moreover, it will introduce fresh music, a revamped lockpicking minigame, and a revamp of the user interface.

Although Oblivion Remastered has yet to be formally unveiled, hints from leaked information suggest that it may undergo notable modifications, including a more subdued visual style and possibly adjustments to the game’s battle system. These differences could distinguish it from Skyblivion.

At the least, gamers will get to decide on which variant of Oblivion they’d prefer to experience towards the end of this year. As for The Elder Scrolls VI, it seems we’ll have to be patient and wait quite some time longer.
