Temu and Shein have disclosed that they’re increasing their product prices within the U.S. as a result of adjustments to “international commerce policies and taxes.
In April 2025, President Donald Trump opted to significantly increase import taxes on Chinese goods, reaching a maximum of 145%. This decision means that products coming from China will be subject to additional fees upon entry into the United States.
Immediately, there was a flurry of speculation on social media regarding the potential fate of budget-friendly platforms such as Temu and Shein, that bring goods directly from China, ranging from craft materials, apparel, to electronic items at incredibly low prices.
The United States is eliminating an exemption on minimal tariffs, previously allowing items under $800 to be tariff-free, a policy that companies like Shein and Temu have utilized extensively over the years.
On Thursday, April 17th, it was announced that both firms would increase their prices within the U.S., as a result of adjustments in tariffs.
Shein and Temu update customers on price increases
On my gaming calendar, I’ve marked April 25, 2025, because that’s the day both Shein and Temu are raising their prices, as they’ve announced on their platforms.
In Temu’s note, they express their gratitude for your ongoing assistance. Ever since we started catering to American customers, our aim has remained straightforward – to provide top-notch goods at reasonable costs, all while contributing positively to the communities where we operate.
Due to new regulations and taxes affecting international commerce, our costs of running the business have increased. In order to continue providing you with the great products without sacrificing their quality, we’ll be raising prices effective from April 25, 2025.
The prices will not change until April 25, so feel free to purchase items now at the current prices. We have ensured a sufficient supply, and we are prepared to deliver your orders without any issues throughout this period.
Shein’s communication primarily revolves around emphasizing their offerings of stylish clothing and accessories.
The impact on users from price hikes isn’t clear yet, since both companies have the flexibility to decide how much of the increased tariff they pass on to consumers. That being said, expect an increase in prices for items such as resin-coated croissants lamps and socks with comical misspellings of Disney characters soon.
The increased tariffs aren’t just influencing one aspect; they’ve also caused Nintendo to postpone U.S. pre-orders for the Switch 2, as they aim to assess how these tariffs might affect the console’s release date set for June 5.
