In the latest preview for “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” Julia Garner’s interpretation of the Silver Surfer has been revealed, yet viewers are torn as to whether this new portrayal surpasses the 2007 version of the character.
After a wait of six years, the time has finally arrived for the Fantastic Four. This is because, as you may recall, Disney purchased Fox and its collection of superheroes, which included Deadpool and the X-Men, exactly six years ago.
This summer, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to debut its rendition of a cosmic four-piece team. Pedro Pascal portrays Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby takes on Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn plays Johnny Storm, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach steps into the role of Ben Grimm/The Thing. Ralph Ineson will feature as Galactus, while John Malkovich’s character is yet to be officially revealed.
To be completely honest, among all the exciting additions to the series, I must say that my personal favorite is none other than Shalla-Bal, also known as the Silver Surfer, brilliantly brought to life by Garner. This character has certainly sparked a lot of discussion among fans!
New Fantastic Four trailer unveils Julia Garner’s Silver Surfer
In the latest preview, Garner’s portrayal of Silver Surfer alerts the Fantastic Four that their reality (or perhaps their rendition of Earth) is earmarked for destruction.
It’s likely that Galactus will be the one controlling her, as she acts as his herald. In the comics, it’s actually Norrin Radd who assumes the role of the Silver Surfer and journeys across the universe to locate planets for Galactus to devour. However, she briefly appears in the Silver Surfer persona, only once in a single panel of Earth X #12.
Regardless of opinions on changing the character’s gender, the introduction of the Surfer in the MCU has ignited a new discussion: does the CGI quality match that of 2007’s Silver Surfer Rise?
People are talking about how well-made the first appearance of the Surfer was in the MCU compared to the 2007 movie, Silver Surfer Rise.
Why does the Silver Surfer from nearly 20 years ago have better CGI then the one now…

User A pointed out that the CGI for the recent Silver Surfer (Shalla-Bal, 2025) falls short when compared to the original 2007 Silver Surfer. They mentioned specific issues with the eyes and mouth not fitting well, suggesting they should be completely metallic and the character should have a more shimmering appearance overall. User B questioned why the 2007 version of Silver Surfer from Fantastic Four seems superior to Julia Garner’s portrayal in 2025.
A user remarked, “Wow, it’s impressive to see just how well the CGI for Silver Surfer from 2007 held up.
Is it just me, or does the CGI for Silver Surfer from the 2007 movie seem more appealing to me? They still have some time left before release, so there might be improvements, but regardless, I really appreciate the design.
Damn, you really start to appreciate how good the CGI was for Silver Surfer in 2007

Regarding the character she’s portraying as the Silver Surfer, there remains a certain enigma or mystery that hasn’t been unveiled yet, as she shared with Who What Wear.
This enigma holds great significance for me, given my profession as an actor. The role is so iconic, and it presented a unique challenge – something I’ve never encountered before while playing a character.
