The upcoming 15th Beijing International Film Festival will shine a light on the expanding influence of Chinese movies worldwide through their “Promoting Overseas Distribution and Exposure of Chinese Films” program, which includes accolades and a significant film industry gathering.
The occasion will honor notable figures who have advocated for Chinese movies on global stages, and industry stalwart Arun Kapoor is slated to receive a special recognition for his groundbreaking achievements across more than five decades.
At the tender age of twenty, Kapoor, who inherited his love for cinema from his father O.P. Kapoor – a pioneer in Indian film exhibition during the 1960s – started distributing movies across Latin America, making Peru his primary hub. Throughout his career, he has produced over thirty films and extended his reach to more than 150 movie screens. His distribution catalog encompasses over fifty Chinese films such as “High Forces,” “The Rescue,” “Come Back Home,” “Ride On,” and “The Climbers.
I proudly carry on the rich tradition of the Kapoor family in the realm of film, as I, Aman Kapoor, traverse global film markets, specifically China, to handpick movies suitable for Peruvian audiences. This endeavor signifies our third generation delving into the art of film distribution.

As a part of the esteemed Kapoor family legacy in cinema, I, Aman Kapoor, venture into major international film markets, particularly focusing on China, to curate Chinese films for Peruvian screens. This marks an exciting milestone – our third generation actively participating in film distribution.
Several significant players in worldwide film distribution have been nominated for the “Outstanding Contribution to the Overseas Distribution of Chinese Films” award.
Under its banner, CMC Pictures spearheads the “China Film Global Distribution” network, spanning an impressive 103 regions and countries across all five continents. With a diverse catalog of almost 100 Chinese-language films under its belt, it has successfully distributed blockbusters such as “Ne Zha,” “The Wandering Earth,” and “Wolf Warrior 2.”
Established in 2010, the North American Film Distribution Company specializing in Chinese cinema has introduced approximately a hundred films to the United States, Canada, the UK, and Ireland. Among these are movies such as “Back to 1980” and “The Road to Victory: China’s Ping Pong Champion.
Sony Pictures Entertainment, a significant player in Hollywood, has been added to a list due to its recent purchases of worldwide distribution rights for “The Fires of Love” and the 2025 Chinese New Year film “The Legend of the Condor Heroes: The Gallants,” as well as obtaining remake permissions for “Hi, Mom.
Among the other contenders are Heylight Pictures, known for introducing French-speaking territories to films such as “Creation of the Gods I & II,” “The Wandering Earth 2,” “Full River Red,” and “Deep Sea”; Well Go, a distributor that has brought hundreds of Chinese movies to North America since the year 2019, ranging from science fiction, comedy, animation, and martial arts; and Star Films of Peru, with more than two decades of expertise in presenting Chinese theatrical releases like “The Sea of Lost Things,” “Back to the Whinnies,” and “The Climbers” to Latin American viewers.
The nominee roster additionally includes Trinity CineAsia, one of Europe‘s leading Chinese-language film distributors holding approximately 60-70% market share and accountable for approximately half of China’s top domestic films being shown in U.K. cinemas – such as “Ne Zha 2”; MM2 Entertainment, a media company based in Singapore that has distributed over 20 Chinese films including “Creation of the Gods II” and “Detective Chinatown 1900” across Singapore and Malaysia, amassing a box office total of more than $13.6 million RMB; Tai Ge Ying Hua Entertainment, founded in 2012 with a focus on propagating Chinese culture globally through film distribution; and Menbai Eiga, which manages Japanese distribution for Chinese films and notably arranged Japan’s initial simultaneous release of “Creation of the Gods II” while maintaining a dedicated Japanese website for Chinese cinema.
I’m excited to share that I’ll be part of a forum at the upcoming festival, focusing on expanding the global reach of Chinese films. We’ll delve into strategies for these movies to resonate with audiences beyond Chinese-speaking communities. Our conversation will dissect the performance of various genres abroad and scrutinize effective cross-cultural storytelling techniques.
Experts in the field from companies like Well Go, Star Films, Heylight, MM2, Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Chinese Film Global Release are likely to be present, offering their thoughts on overcoming cultural barriers using successful localization techniques, effective social media marketing, and utilizing film festivals as platforms for cultural exchange.
Notable achievements showcased recently encompass the development of the “Gods” series, the upcoming sequel to “The Wandering Earth,” and “Deep Sea.” These productions underscore the expanding global allure of Chinese cinema and its versatile narrative abilities.
Trinity CineAsia’s distribution of “The Wandering Earth 2” garnered significant attention as it became the top-earning Chinese-language film in the UK over the past fifteen years, symbolizing the expanding influence of Chinese cinema within European markets.
The move is made at a time when Chinese movies are growing in popularity worldwide, with distributors offering a wider variety of content such as sci-fi films, animations, modern dramas, and historical productions to global viewers.
The 15th Beijing International Film Festival takes place April 18-26.
