Why Did Netflix Suddenly Remove The Legend of Korra?

In a surprising turn of events, it’s no longer possible to stream The Legend of Korra, Nickelodeon’s successor to Avatar: The Last Airbender, on Netflix. The reason behind this change might seem rather unexciting.

Initially aired in 2012, this TV show centers around Korra, who is both the successor of the Avatar role and a reincarnation of Kang. As she grows and develops her abilities, she works to protect Republic City from malevolent forces lurking in the realms of both the physical and spiritual world.

Similar to its predecessor, it received acclaim from both critics and viewers, being commended for its daring exploration of real-world matters and diversity. Another upcoming series at Nickelodeon is Avatar: Seven Havens, which follows the storyline after the conclusion of The Legend of Korra.

I’m sorry to say, but it seems you won’t be able to watch or marathon the series on Netflix as you had planned.

Why The Legend of Korra was removed from Netflix

The series “Legend of Korra” is no longer available on Netflix due to the fact that its licensing agreement with the streaming service was not extended by Paramount, Nickelodeon’s parent company.

As a gaming enthusiast, navigating through the world of streaming platforms can be quite the challenge sometimes. Despite having multiple subscriptions for Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Disney+, and others, I can’t always count on finding that specific show or movie I’m dying to watch.

Titles frequently switch ownership, and exclusive content helps attract new subscribers. For instance, The CW decided to terminate its deal with Netflix so they could retain their programs exclusively on Max and Paramount Plus, which is why Supernatural will no longer be available as of the end of this year.

In simple terms, The Legend of Korra has become unavailable on Netflix globally due to certain decisions made.

How to watch The Legend of Korra

As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve got some good news for fellow fans of The Legend of Korra! You can catch all the action exclusively on Paramount Plus. However, if streaming isn’t your thing, you’ve got options! You can grab digital copies to own from Amazon Prime, or go old-school with a DVD or Blu-ray purchase. Enjoy the journey through the Avatar universe at your convenience!

To be fair, the fans were made aware in advance. In a previous interview with THR, Nickelodeon CEO Brian Robbins mentioned that licensing both Avatar shows was part of a broader plan: growing their audience… and eventually pulling them back, requiring viewers to subscribe in order to watch it.

He mentioned, “Here are two outstanding instances of it. ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’, a series broadcasted over three seasons on Nickelodeon, may not have been a massive hit, but it certainly garnered a devoted fanbase.

Initially, we sold the rights for that series to Netflix, which saw tremendous success. Subsequently, we introduced a sequel series based on “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” titled “The Legend of Korra,” on Paramount+, and it performed exceptionally well. This achievement paved the way for our current partnership with Nickelodeon, inviting the original creators back to develop Avatar Studios. Currently, we’re moving forward with a comprehensive franchise plan, producing movies and spinoffs based on the Avatar universe.

We’re not trying to hide anything from others regarding our strategies in other services. People are fine with the content we provide and they comprehend our approach. We’re completely transparent about it.

While I eagerly wait for the next big release, here are some exciting TV shows hitting Netflix in April and some major productions slated for 2025. And if you’re an Avatar: The Last Airbender fan like me, don’t miss our ranking of all-time great TV shows where it stands!
