CAUTION: This post reveals significant plot details from the Season 4 finale of “Abbott Elementary,” broadcasted on ABC on Wednesday, and available for streaming on Hulu starting Thursday. Proceed with caution if you haven’t watched it yet!
Although the characters of Janine from “Abbott Elementary” and Gregory, portrayed by Quinta Brunson and Tyler James Williams respectively, are deeply involved in a relationship, it doesn’t make it simple for the real-life actors to convincingly impersonate each other in one comedic scene during the Season 4 finale.
The titled episode, “Please Touch Museum,” depicts Abbott’s teachers and pupils on an excursion to a tactile Philadelphia museum, which the disgruntled eighth graders refer to as a “babies’ museum.” To boost the spirits of these almost-teenagers, the museum guide proposes they create a play about their experiences at “Abbott,” but with a twist – it should make fun of their teachers. To add to the humor, the students decide to cast their teachers in roles portraying each other.
Williams admitted that portraying Janine during their recent series finale was challenging for him because she wasn’t particularly complex, being generally content. He explained this to EbMaster on Tuesday at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles. However, they knew it would be an intense scene, and they enjoyed experimenting with each other.
When Brunson shared the show concept with Chris Perfetti, he secretly hoped it wouldn’t require him to portray Barbara, as he didn’t want to emulate Sheryl Lee Ralph’s bible-quoting kindergarten teacher character. However, as expected, his fears came true, and he jokingly commented, “Well, here we are.” In a similar fashion, Ralph mimicked Lisa Ann Walter’s tough-talking teacher character, Melissa, while Walter took on Perfetti’s awkwardly enthusiastic character, Jacob. William Stanford Davis, on the other hand, played his own eccentric janitor character, Mr. Johnson.
In my critique, I must say that just like every production by Quinta, it was a hilarious piece, but what truly sets it apart is the tender emotion that lies beneath. Frankly, I’m taken aback that we haven’t explored this approach before.
Brunson remembered the moment the concept was proposed during our brainstorming session. “We were stuck on figuring out an engaging activity for eighth graders,” Brunson explained. “To be honest, we weren’t sure where to start.” He continued, “But when I finally saw it in action, it turned out to be much funnier than I had anticipated!
Over the span of 22 engaging episodes at “Abbott”, I’ve witnessed a lot. Reflecting on some of this season’s significant themes, I can’t help but feel a sense of fulfillment about being involved in the labor dispute storyline. This is because I’ve had the privilege to be part of the SAG-AFTRA negotiation committee in the past.
Walter expressed, “It seemed intentional to them that I’d become the main voice for the union, and I jokingly responded, ‘Fantastic, now I have a huge bullseye on my back!’ Yet, I embrace it, because I adore being part of a pro-union movement, and Philadelphia is a city deeply rooted in union values.
In Season 4, things moved quickly for Ava, played by Janelle James. She faced a rollercoaster of events including being dismissed as principal only to be reinstated again. Furthermore, she found herself gradually developing feelings for the school district’s IT tech, O’Shon (portrayed by Matthew Law). Her character arc progresses significantly in the season finale.
I found it intriguing to witness Ava opening up more about herself and becoming slightly softer,” I shared about her character developing feelings. “What truly appeals to me, though, is that even in this soft phase, she hasn’t forsaken her fundamental personality traits. That’s what makes the show’s writing stand out – it’s not about a complete 180-degree turn.
As a movie critic, here’s my take on the future of the teachers in “Abbott”: Despite the fact that ABC comedy “Abbott” secured a full season order for its fifth instalment several months ago, Perfetti reveals that Brunson and the writing team will keep their cards close to their chest, only sharing details with the cast when necessary. However, I can’t help but express one hope for the upcoming episodes: may they continue to bring the unique blend of humor, heart, and unpredictability that has made this series a standout in the comedy genre.
As a movie reviewer,
“In the show, it seems like we’re really pushing Jacob’s physical comedy skills to the max, so I’m looking forward to seeing more of this in the future. However, I have complete trust in Quinta and our writing team who, in many ways, understand us actors better than we even know ourselves.
