McDonald’s Japan has unveiled an innovative new chicken sandwich, where instead of a traditional bun, they use two rice cakes as the bread.
Over time, McDonald’s has consistently introduced new menu options, ranging from various sandwiches, combination meals, and an array of McFlurry flavors.
On the other hand, these burgers are usually only available at retailers beyond U.S. borders. For instance, the McExtreme is exclusive to Spain, while the Big Arch burger has only made it as far as a planned debut in Canada for 2024.
In this new update, the changes are confined to McDonald’s Japan only, however, it introduces a significant alteration that has left some enthusiasts in awe.
McDonald’s Gohan Chicken Tatsuta doesn’t use a bun
In Japan, McDonald’s offers a unique sandwich that includes their signature fried chicken paired with either sweet and sour sauce or tartar sauce as your preferred dressing.
Rather than a traditional bun, the company opts for two grilled rice patties instead. Should you prefer the classic option, they can be swapped out for a standard bun.
If you’re craving the sandwich that comes with rice cakes, McDonald’s Japan serves it exclusively during dinner hours. Until 5 pm, they only offer it as a bread sandwich.

On April 15th, they provided an update on the much-anticipated launch by announcing a timeframe for its arrival, which is scheduled to occur some time from April to September 14, 2025.
The wrap will have a freshly introduced chicken strip serving as its foundation. It’s also speculated that this chicken strip may be offered as a standalone dish at McDonald’s in the future.
