Godzilla Is Finally Stomping His Way Back Into Console Games, But It’ll Be A While

Over the past few years, there have been many popular Godzilla films that were well-liked by audiences. Now, the parent company Toho is aiming to expand this success beyond just movies. They’ve revealed their plan to invest a whopping $830 million into new games, anime, and other projects based on their intellectual properties (IP), with Godzilla console games being one of them.

Toho intends to allocate $490 million specifically for creating content, with a goal to boost its presence globally (as reported by Bloomberg). This investment will encompass various types of media, including video games, animation, theme park attractions, and mobile games, as part of their strategy to expand the Toho brand beyond its current boundaries.

Over the past several decades, Godzilla has made appearances in multiple video games. However, in more recent times, he’s been mostly seen in crossovers or brief cameos. For instance, in games like Fall Guys, players can acquire Godzilla-themed costumes. Additionally, Call of Duty: Warzone included Godzilla as a potential threat and adversary during its Operation Monarch event.

In the recent past, Godzilla has appeared in multiple mobile games and a turn-based strategy game reminiscent of Into the Breach, titled Godzilla: Voxel Wars, was released in 2022. However, the most significant game starring this titan before that was 2014’s Godzilla for the PS4, which came out in Europe and the US a year later in 2015. Unfortunately, upon its release, this game received mostly unfavorable reviews, earning an average critic score of 38 on Metacritic’s sister platform, TopMob.

In his review for TopMob, Kevin VanOrd stated that Godzilla has an overwhelming amount of design flaws which are difficult to even count, yet the most chilling aspect is how these massive monsters could be so tedious. He rated the game a 3 out of 10.

As a diehard gamer, I can’t help but feel excited about the future of my favorite monster, Godzilla! Even though it might take some time before he returns to console games, his cinematic journey is looking more promising than ever. You see, a follow-up to the Academy Award-winning movie, “Godzilla Minus One,” is currently in production. Plus, Legendary Pictures’ Monsterverse has big plans for Godzilla and King Kong – they’re joining forces once again in a film set to hit theaters on March 26, 2027! Can’t wait to witness their epic battle!
