At the heart of South America, Chile’s Sanfic Industria – a major industry event – has revealed two fresh segments. These new additions aim to foster innovative diversity within Latin American filmmaking and television production, while also boosting their global influence.
A development initiative focusing on queer stories and creators, namely directors, scriptwriters, and others from Latin America, called Queer Incubator: Latin America, will pick six projects to feature. These selected projects will receive guidance from industry professionals in crafting compelling narratives that challenge societal norms, with a focus on dissident, queer, or non-conforming filmmaking and television storytelling.
The Chile Industry Academy, held in conjunction with the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, will primarily concentrate on areas such as international filmmaking, distribution, programming, and marketing – aspects that are also the focus of other Locarno Academies worldwide. In simpler terms, it’s not about producing films but rather enhancing skills related to global film industry aspects like distribution, screening, and promotion.
In Academias, lessons are provided by skilled professionals who share valuable insights, advice, and knowledge gained through practical experience, which isn’t always readily available in public resources. Since many students are already active practitioners or industry representatives, including some at prominent film studios, the Academy is expected to boost Sanfic Industria’s market influence significantly from 2025 onwards.
Sanfic Industria has revealed its two fresh segments and extended an invitation for applications in the Queer Incubator and its additional six areas, including the 14th Ibero-American Works in Progress, the 13th Ibero-American Santiago Lab for fiction and documentary projects, and the 6th Sanfic-Morbido Lab, a program aimed at genre development. These diverse sections regularly attract significant works to Sanfic Industria like last year’s “El Show del Gran Luciferio,” from Caye Casas in Spain, whose “The Coffee Table” was praised by Stephen King as both “terrifying and laughably funny; darker than the Coen Brothers’ wildest nightmares.
Moreover, the 2025 version will feature the 6th Series of Lab Fiction/Documentary, along with the 3rd edition of Sanfic ODS Lab, as well as the Female Producers Lab.
The 2025 edition includes the 6th installment of the Lab Fiction/Documentary series, plus the 3rd Sanfic ODS Lab and the Female Producers Lab in its third iteration.
According to Gabriela Sandoval, director of Sanfic Industry and founder of Sanfic, we think that a robust audiovisual sector is established through government policies that ensure a variety of perspectives and fair access to tools for growth and global representation within our industry.
From the outset, Sanfic Industria has served as a hub for training, growth, and strategic alignment within Ibero-American audiovisual production,” she pointed out, emphasizing that “the addition of a Queer Incubator strengthens our dedication to fostering an industry that is more diverse and representative.
