Tom Hardy’s ‘Havoc’ Leads Netflix’s Wales Gambit With $265 Million Economic Boost

Since 2020, Netflix’s strategic investments in Welsh production facilities have contributed over £200 million (approximately $265 million) to the U.K. economy, as stated in a report published on Wednesday by Netflix and Creative Wales.

The significant financial success arrives as the streaming service prepares for the premiere of director Gareth Evans’ action-packed thriller “Havoc,” which features Tom Hardy. Notably, this movie is now recognized as the biggest feature film ever filmed exclusively in Wales.

Speaking as Netflix’s UK Vice President of Production, Anna Mallet, stated, “Our favorite shows like ‘Sex Education,’ ‘The Crown,’ and now ‘Havoc’ were not only streamed but also filmed or produced in Wales. This country is truly a gem for entertainment production due to its abundant creative talent and breathtaking natural scenery.

As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but marvel at Netflix’s strategic decision to invest in Welsh productions. This move is a significant piece of their broader U.K. production strategy, transforming Wales into a preferred filming location for their high-profile content. Apart from “Havoc,” this beautiful nation has been the chosen backdrop for hit series like “The Witcher.” The economic impact of these productions is far-reaching, creating a ripple effect that benefits the region substantially.

As per the study, Netflix’s productions have backed more than 500 businesses in Wales, spanning various industries since 2020. For every pound ($1.32) spent by Netflix in Wales, approximately 58 pence (76 cents) goes towards TV and film sectors, with the remaining sum benefiting sectors such as rental and leasing, creative arts, and food and hospitality. The economic effect reaches beyond direct spending, with each pound invested by Netflix causing an additional 80 pence ($1.06) to be generated throughout the Welsh supply chain.

minister Jack Sargeant from Wales expressed great pride in their thriving Welsh creative sectors that provide jobs for more than 35,000 gifted professionals. He also highlighted the top-tier facilities available for film and television production in the region.

Through the financing of “Sex Education,” a talent pool has been developed as well. This show generated approximately 60 trainee and apprenticeship roles, several of which have transitioned into permanent industry positions. Additionally, the “Ignite Your Creativity” program, a joint venture with the National Youth Theatre, has provided opportunities for over 350 young people through workshops held in Newport, Cardiff, Port Talbot, Torfaen, and Bridgend.

Netflix has shown support for Welsh cultural heritage by providing Welsh subtitles across their content, such as “The Adam Project” starring Ryan Reynolds and “Red Notice.” In 2023, they acquired the rights to air “Dal Y Mellt,” which makes it their first-ever series in the Welsh language.

As a movie enthusiast, I’d put it this way: “As a fellow Welshman, it was thrilling for me, Gareth Evans, to direct ‘Havoc’ in my home country. Witnessing how productions of this scale boost local businesses and shine a light on our creative prowess has been nothing short of amazing.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that Creative Wales’ interim leader, Joedi Langley, has expressed our eagerness to collaborate closely with Netflix for many years. Our goal is to leverage this partnership to unlock Wales’ full potential as a filming location for both local and international blockbusters.
