A producer for *Doctor Who* is pushing back against reports that the show might be cancelled. This comes after a writer for the series said the show was ‘effectively finished,’ fueled by speculation that Disney+ is planning to stop making it.
In a recent interview with BBC Radio Wales, Jane Tranter shared positive news about the future of *Doctor Who*. She explained that the BBC and BBC Studios have a deal with Disney+ to produce 26 episodes, and they’ve currently filmed 21. Five more episodes of the spin-off series are still on the way, and after those air, the BBC and Disney+ will collaborate to decide the show’s next steps.
Robert Shearman, a writer for the show back in 2005 and author of several *Doctor Who* novels, recently criticized the series’ ending to Season 15. The finale featured a character who strongly resembled Billie Piper’s Rose Tyler. Shearman believes this ending definitively closed off certain possibilities in a way that was unusual for *Doctor Who*.
“To say it’s ‘as dead as we’ve ever known’ is pretty harsh and just not accurate,” Tranter responded. She explained that the show is a long-running franchise – over 60 years old – and has been consistently running for 20 years since its revival in 2005, when she was at the BBC. “You’d naturally expect it to evolve over that time,” she added.
Tranter reassured fans of *Doctor Who* worldwide, hinting at changes but remaining tight-lipped about specifics. She explained that the show will inevitably evolve, saying, ‘Nothing stays the same forever, and it shouldn’t.’ She confirmed that the Doctor will return, though, and everyone—including herself and the production team—will have to wait to find out when and who will take on the role.
Doctor Who’s Future Could Get a More Concrete Update Next Year
Russell T Davies recently indicated that *Doctor Who* has a bright future. Earlier this year, it was confirmed the show would go on, even without Disney’s involvement. Davies’ latest statements suggest we’ll find out the official plans for *Doctor Who* soon.
The current season has 21 of its 26 episodes available on Disney+. Once the five-episode spin-off, *The War Between the Land and the Sea*, airs, the show will likely fulfill its current agreement. After that, *Doctor Who* fans should get a clearer idea of the show’s future – whether it will continue with both the BBC and Disney+. While nothing is certain, it seems highly probable that *Doctor Who* will continue in some form.
