Mubi Acquires Courtney Stephens and Callie Hernandez’s ‘Invention’ for Streaming in North America (EXCLUSIVE)

Mubi is set to premier the semi-autobiographical conspiracy movie “Invention,” directed by Courtney Stephens and Callie Hernandez, as an exclusive streaming debut across North America. This unique film will make its appearance on Mubi’s platform this summer, following a limited theatrical run starting Friday in New York City.

As a cinephile, I found myself captivated by the 16mm-filmed collaboration between writer-director Stephens and writer-star Hernandez, titled “Invention.” This poignant production incorporates actual footage of Hernandez’s late father, a renowned alternative medicine physician who tragically passed away from COVID in 2021. In the movie, Hernandez portrays Carrie, a character grappling with her personal grief following the inheritance of an enigmatic healing device from her deceased father. The film’s ensemble also boasts other independent filmmakers such as Caveh Zahedi, Joe Swanberg, and James N. Kienitz Wilkins.

The film titled “Invention” was first shown during the 2024 edition of the Locarno Film Festival. There, Hernandez received the Pardo award for the best acting performance in the Filmmakers of the Present Section of the festival. Following its debut at Locarno, the movie had its North American premiere at the Los Angeles Movie Festival this month, and recently made its East Coast debut at New Directors/New Films.

Over on the other side of the ocean, “Invention” is set to have a seven-day stage performance in London this coming summer, taking place at the Institute of Contemporary Arts as part of their Off-Circuit series.

The movie hails from Jacket Weather and Hernandez’s production house, Neurotika Haus, which jointly produced Pete Ohs’ film “The True Beauty of Being Bitten by a Tick,” a hit at SXSW this year. Hernandez established Neurotika Haus following over a decade in screen acting, boasting roles in films like “La La Land,” “Alien: Covenant,” and “Under the Silver Lake.” Alongside Stephens, they previously co-directed the documentary “The American Sector,” which was released in 2021.
