OpenAI reportedly working on social media platform to compete with X

According to recent reports, OpenAI is embarking on the initial development of a social media platform, aiming to challenge Elon Musk’s X platform directly.

According to The Verge’s report, the ongoing project appears to center around enhancing ChatGPT’s capabilities by introducing an image generation feature along with a social media-like feed. It remains uncertain whether this new aspect will be developed as a standalone app or integrated directly into ChatGPT.

It’s said that this upcoming social media site aims to incorporate AI, assisting users in distributing their content. A source from a competing AI firm informed The Verge that Grok’s collaboration with X left everyone envious.

“Especially how people create viral tweets by getting it to say something stupid,” they added.

OpenAI vows to compete with X and Meta

The chatter about this application started as early as February, with news breaking out that Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta was planning to launch a separate Meta AI app, intended to challenge ChatGPT in the marketplace.

In reply, the CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, jokingly tweeted: “Alright, perhaps we’ll develop a social app. If Facebook were to challenge us, and we could counter with an ‘undo’ move, it would be quite amusing.

lol if facebook tries to come at us and we just uno reverse them it would be so funny 🤣

Additionally, Altman has been discussing the project with outsiders and getting feedback on it.

In the year 2023, Zuckerberg introduced an application similar to X, which he named ‘Threads’. This new app was seamlessly connected with Instagram, providing it with an extensive user base prior to its launch due to Instagram’s existing popularity.

2025 saw a significant surge in ChatGPT’s popularity due to its innovative image-generating capabilities. So much so, that by March, Sam Altman admitted they were struggling to meet the high demand for creating Studio Ghibli-inspired images, which had become an incredibly viral trend.

Since our launch, we’ve been struggling to keep pace due to an overwhelming response that’s unparalleled in my experience. Consequently, our team has been working tirelessly to maintain the service. To manage the high traffic, we’ve had to implement limitations on usage rates.” He expressed this.
