American Cinematheque’s ‘Bleak Week’ Expands to Seven Cities Including London, Sets Special Guest Robert Eggers – Film News in Brief

The American Cinematheque’s annual ‘Bleak Week: Film Festival of Despair’ is set to grow beyond Los Angeles, reaching seven cities across the U.S. and internationally to London in June. Alongside maintaining its operations at the Aero, Egyptian, and Los Feliz 3 Theatres in LA, ‘Bleak Week’ will also be screened at Portland’s Hollywood Theatre, Chicago’s Music Box Theatre, Dallas’ Texas Theatre, Minneapolis’ Trylon Cinema, New York’s Paris Theater, Boston’s Coolidge Corner Theatre, and London’s Prince Charles Cinema.

Distinguished visitors like Robert Eggers and Todd Solondz are scheduled to make appearances at the Prince Charles Cinema and Paris Theater.

Established in 2022, this festival honors films that courageously explore the darkest aspects of human suffering. The event kicks off in Los Angeles and Chicago from June 1st to 7th, followed by stops in Portland and Minneapolis from June 6th to 12th. ‘The Gloomy Fortnight’ then travels to New York, Boston, and Dallas from June 8th to 14th, before wrapping up in London from June 15th to 21st.

On June 2nd, as part of Bleak Week, Turner Classic Movies will air a collection of somber movies titled ‘bleak cinema.’ Some of the films you’ll see that night include “Make Way For Tomorrow,” “Man of the West,” “Cries and Whispers,” “Breaking the Waves,” and “The Seventh Victim.” To kick off the evening, host Dave Karger will introduce the first three movies shown.

Newly-Appointed AMPS Chair Presents Winners for 2025 Television Drama, Factual Film & Product Awards

On April 13th, George Foulgham, chairman of the Association of Motion Picture Sound (AMPS), and his vice chair, Kate Davis, revealed the victors of the 2025 AMPS Television, Drama, Documentary Film, and Product Awards during a unique ceremony held at Greenwich University. The triumphant Television Drama and Documentary Film entries have been put forward for the 2025 BAFTA Television Craft Awards nomination as well.

The AMPS Awards, chosen by professionals in the field of wound care, celebrate exceptional technical and creative achievements spanning various disciplines. Additionally, AMPS grants Certificates of Merit to every member of the creative team involved in winning soundtracks, as a means to highlight the collaborative aspect of sound production.
