8BitDo Ultimate 2 Bluetooth Controller Is Now Available For Nintendo Switch

8BitDo’s latest release, the 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Bluetooth Controller, designed for Nintendo Switch, represents their top-tier and most advanced pro-style gaming controller to date. Similar to its original counterpart, this Nintendo version shares the same name, 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Bluetooth. However, it comes at a $10 premium compared to the 2.4GHz Wireless model for PC that debuted in February. Technically speaking, the Ultimate 2 Bluetooth controller is largely similar, but it still maintains compatibility with PC systems.

Significantly, the latest version of the Ultimate 2 controller is expected to be compatible with the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 using Bluetooth, and potentially even through a 2.4GHz dongle. Therefore, when preorders for the Nintendo Switch 2 console and accessories become available, it would be wise to consider comparing the new official Switch 2 Pro Controller with the 8BitDo’s Ultimate 2. The official controller includes two reprogrammable back buttons, while the Ultimate 2 offers four reprogrammable inputs, along with upgraded analog sticks, trigger locks, and numerous internal customization options.

8BitDo’s latest controller, The Ultimate 2, boasts an impressive array of features, making it their most advanced controller to date. After testing the PC version, we consider it a significant improvement over the original model. Currently, it stands as the best controller within 8BitDo’s range, although we haven’t tested the Bluetooth edition designed for Switch consoles yet. In our next update, the original Ultimate will be dethroned from our top spot in the ‘Best PC Controllers’ list, with the Ultimate 2 taking its place. In the upcoming weeks, I’ll provide a comprehensive review of both models, and I expect that the Bluetooth version of the Ultimate 2 might take over as TopMob’s preferred choice for the best third-party Switch controller.

8BitDo’s latest version of The Ultimate Controller boasts some significant upgrades. They’ve advanced their 2.4GHz Wireless technology and called it “8Speed.” When paired wirelessly using the provided USB-C dongle, the Ultimate 2 reportedly provides nearly flawless input recognition with a latency of just 1ms. The Ultimate 2 offers a polling rate of 1,000Hz when utilizing 2.4GHz wireless or USB-C wired connections, which is an improvement over its predecessor. To clarify, the original Ultimate provided a reliable and fast wireless connection, but the new model offers a more dependable and smooth one. Notably, this is the first Ultimate Controller to use a USB-C dongle instead of USB-A. The Switch version can wirelessly pair with the console via Bluetooth, while the PC edition only has Bluetooth compatibility on Android devices. It remains uncertain if the Ultimate 2 also supports Bluetooth on Android, though it seems unlikely that it wouldn’t.

8BitDo has swapped out Hall Effect joysticks present in numerous controllers with Tactile Motion Response (TMR) joysticks instead. Similar to Hall Effect joysticks, TMR technology employs electromagnets to deliver a more fluid, precise movement experience. The electromagnetic controls also help reduce the issue of analog stick drift. Despite their similarities, TMR technology is generally considered an advancement over Hall Effect tech. These updated joysticks come with adjustable RGB lighting rings for added customization.

8BitDo’s The Ultimate 2 is the first model in the series to include four additional control buttons. This hybrid design combines elements from the original Ultimate and the latest budget wireless controller, the Ultimate 2C. It retains the two customizable rear triggers found on the original Ultimate, while also incorporating the additional shoulder buttons that are characteristic of the Ultimate 2C.

8BitDo included a frequently-used professional modification option, known as trigger locks, in the Ultimate 2 model. By simply flipping the switches at the back, the Hall Effect analog sticks can be transformed into linear buttons instantaneously.

Besides the hardware changes, the controller is compatible with 8BitDo’s exclusive software on both PC and Android devices. With the latest Ultimate Software V2, users can create up to three custom profiles, adjust settings like stick, trigger, and motion control sensitivity, alter rumble intensity, and set analog stick dead zones as per preference.

8BitDo’s high-end series, including the Ultimate 2, features a compatible USB-C charging station that houses the detachable dongle. The exact playtime from a full charge isn’t specified, but the Ultimate 2’s battery is significantly larger than the original’s. Both versions of the Ultimate 2 boast 1000mAh batteries, compared to the 480mAh batteries in the standard Ultimate and Ultimate Bluetooth for Switch. However, keep in mind that the new lighting rings could quicken battery drain when activated.
