The Locarno Film Festival has renewed the contract of Italian film critic, Giona A. Nazzaro, as its artistic director for the upcoming three years.
Nazzaro, who once served as the head of the Venice Film Festival’s Critics’ Week, has been in charge of a significant Swiss film festival focusing on independent cinema since 2021. His leadership role, granted under a five-year term, comes to an end this year.
As a movie enthusiast hailing from Switzerland, I’ve been fortunate enough to contribute to the growth and influence of the Locarno Film Festival. Over the years, I’ve played a significant role in promoting art-house films, ensuring they reach the broadest audience possible. A perfect example of this is last year’s Golden Leopard winner, “Toxic,” directed by Saulė Bliuvaitė, a poignant exploration of young female friendships that marked her debut feature. This film, which we showcased at Locarno, went on to grace screens at an impressive 70 international film festivals following its premiere with us.
Nazzaro expressed gratitude to President Maja Hoffmann and the Locarno Film Festival’s board of directors for their faith and respect, as well as for him and his team. He noted that working together during these transformative times in the audiovisual sector and film industry – at a historically complex period – presents an exhilarating challenge that will motivate us to strive towards our 80th anniversary with renewed confidence.”
This version maintains the original’s tone while using simpler, more conversational language.
Previously working with the Locarno festival for a considerable time before assuming the role of chief in 2021, Nazzaro has also been part of selection panels for film festivals such as Rome, Turin, Visions du Reel, and Festival dei Popoli in Florence. He is an accomplished author, penning numerous books and essays on diverse topics like Hong Kong cinema, postmodern action movies, and monographs dedicated to Abel Ferrara, Spike Lee, and Gus Van Sant.
The upcoming 78th edition of Locarno will run Aug. 6-16.
