Alkimia Entertainment and THQ Nordic have unveiled the second segment of their continuous Making Of series focusing on the remake of Gothic. In this latest video (available below), the game creators delve into their process of updating the game for today’s players while maintaining fidelity to its original essence.
The revamped version of Gothic intends to preserve the rich gameplay and storyline from its predecessor, but it’s also planned to incorporate enhancements in gameplay and storytelling. Additionally, the studio is working on a graphical upgrade using contemporary graphics technology and hardware for an improved visual experience.
Studio Director Reinhard Pollice stated that our task was to decide which parts should remain unchanged and which ones need more development,” he said in the video. Essentially, he clarified that the improvements being applied to the remake of Gothic are primarily aimed at resolving inconsistencies, plot gaps, and contradictions within the narrative.
The studio is equally dedicated to ensuring that the remake of the Gothic game offers a realistic, lively open environment, which was a hallmark of the original version. This extends beyond merely arranging NPC schedules, as explained by lead game designer Javier Untoria. Instead, their aim is to create a more immersive and complex living world.
Untoria stated, “We’re doing more than setting up the houses and routines of non-player characters; we’re building a vibrant world teeming with personality.
In the initial “Behind the Scenes” video, which was shared in February, the developers discussed and emphasized the fundamental spirit of “Gothic“. During this video, they expressed a desire to capture the core elements of the original game that have resonated with its devoted fans. Among these aspects is the absence of guidance, allowing players to explore and solve problems independently.
As a devoted fan, I was utterly astounded the very first time I delved into the world of Gothic. The unique aspect that struck me was the ability to navigate many scenarios by manipulating the actions of others. Naturally, they would exploit you in return, but the game offered opportunities where you could seize the moment and have a character eliminate a Scavenger on your behalf.
The updated version of the game in the Gothic style hasn’t been given a specific launch date yet, but it’s expected to arrive on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S later in the year. In the interim, PC users can explore the Nyras Prologue demo that was previously launched during Steam Next Fest in February. Initially planned as a temporary demo, it remains accessible for free.
Meanwhile, you can grab the original Gothic series at reduced costs from the official THQ Nordic store. The price cuts extend to Gothic-themed merchandise as well, such as collectors’ editions, mugs, glassware, and t-shirts.
To learn more about the remake, you can watch a 22-minute video clip that was published in February. This video offers an unbroken playthrough of the game’s initial stages, which includes a glimpse into the brutal combat that is a prominent feature of the game. Additionally, you will get to see how the mines and surrounding countryside are designed during the early parts of the game.
