Why must every action star possess the physical strength of Dwayne Johnson, the menacing glare of Liam Neeson, and the acrobatic skills of Jason Statham? However, this rule does not apply to Rami Malek in his latest movie “The Amateur”. He portrays a seemingly ordinary yet incredibly intelligent CIA cryptographer who seeks revenge for his wife’s death in a London terrorist attack.
To set the record straight, “The Amatuer” isn’t your typical high-octane action film. Instead, it bears a strong resemblance to a suspenseful spy thriller. Directed by James Hawes, this adaptation is based on Robert Littell’s 1981 novel of the same name. Rami Malek portrays Charlie Heller, a brilliant CIA analyst focused on encryption and analysis. He’s a solitary individual who prefers his work over social outings, as demonstrated by his refusal to join his wife Sarah (Rachel Brosnahan) on a business trip to London.

However, when Charlie learns from CIA Deputy Director Frank Moore (Holt McCallany) that Sarah has perished in a terrorist attack at her London hotel, his world crumbles. Despite being told by the higher-ups that they’re handling it, days of delayed responses and lack of information lead Charlie to take action. Using his unique skillset, he vows to find and retaliate against those who stole Sarah’s life.
However, Charlie discovers damaging proof implicating Director Moore, which puts him under scrutiny from his influential superiors. As he embarks on a worldwide quest to locate his wife’s murderers, he must simultaneously evade CIA agents dispatched by the same agency he serves. Among these operatives is Robert “Hendo” Henderson, who was once thought of as Charlie’s mentor but has become an assassin. The film boasts an exceptional ensemble cast that includes Laurence Fishburne, Caitríona Balfe, Jon Bernthal, Michael Stuhlbarg, Julianne Nicholson, and Adrian Martinez.

The Amateur” begins with a promising foundation for an engaging espionage tale. The early part skillfully portrays Charlie, revealing his strengths and flaws that significantly impact the narrative. However, the latter half struggles somewhat in its transition between key moments, causing a sluggish pace. Despite Rami Malek’s consistent acting, he finds himself ensnared within the plot’s slow-moving gears. The character growth mostly halts as Charlie is moved from one nation to another by the progressing storyline.
In summary, “The Amateur” is skillfully and boldly produced, featuring London, Marseille, and Istanbul beautifully captured and seamlessly woven into the plot. Malek delivers an impressive performance as the distinctive protagonist, and the action scenes align perfectly with his character. However, it could benefit from a more compact second half and additional appearances by Jon Bernthal to enhance this engaging yet somewhat lengthy film.
