Friends, it’s finally time to see our perseverance pay off. At first, there might have even been a sense of fascination towards him, then unease, and ultimately disgust. We couldn’t look away as he engulfed the ‘Katina’ in a madness-fueled whirlwind. Now we can celebrate – Wihan is no more. Not only has he vanished, but Jason has dismissed him with harsh words.
The captain compared the situation to a disease that needs to be removed. I was so pleased when Wihan got fired, though it pains me to admit it because he’s a real person with feelings. Unfortunately, we had to let Johnny go as well due to this turn of events. As soon as Johnny’s forceful actions, while undeniably extreme, stirred up the captain, I knew something like this would occur. Johnny’s aggressive behavior had left Jason powerless for some time, but it was reassuring to see Jason making decisions again after such a long period of inactivity.
In the first part of this week’s episode, we see the aftermath of the dispute between Johnny, Wihan, and Alesia regarding the bunkbed. If this were a different type of show with an audience and multiple cameras, it might have been comical. However, in this case, Jason sends Johnny to a hotel to calm down, and Alesia fills her shipmates in on what transpired. In a game reminiscent of the telephone, gossip and opinions spread throughout the boat. At one point, Wihan calls Alesia but doesn’t offer any useful advice or comfort. Instead, he stays in bed, choosing to sleep soundly while Alesia confides in her friends about her feelings of guilt.
In the main bedroom, Harry listens as Lara and Tzarina return, ensuring he isn’t bothered by the commotion, to share their news with him. Unnoticed, Bri tags along, but neither she nor Harry acknowledge that Bri was weeping earlier or that Harry had a disagreement with Wihan, followed by comfort from his coworker and supervisor. Strangely, Bri chooses to return to her own quarters rather than spend the night with Harry, despite Lara being nearby and likely encouraging them to have some quiet time after such intense emotions. A hint at the end of the episode suggests that the bond between Harry and Bri might be strained once more.
During the morning, Jason listens to everyone’s recount of the previous night’s events while Marina prepares pancakes in the kitchen, seemingly detached from the troubles besetting the boat. In the bridge, Alesia informs Jason about the confusion — she admitted she had talked about Harry crying to Wihan, assuming it was Johnny she was speaking with. Jason, donning his Detective Cap, traces the sequence of events back to Lara’s report, then to Harry’s, and eventually to Tzarina’s. Each person echoes their earlier complaints about Wihan — he lacks accountability, is hard to get along with, and yells at Harry. However, it appears that both Lara and Harry find him “not very nice,” which seems like an inaccurate assessment of the issue. Alas, if only that were all there was!
Initially, Johnny is let go due to “safety concerns,” according to Jason. Despite appearing dejected, Johnny accepts his termination gracefully. In an almost philosophical manner, he remarks that difficult times and mishaps are what help us grow into better individuals, a sentiment that momentarily overshadows the memory of him punching a cabinet. Upon Alesia’s visit to bid farewell, Johnny affectionately refers to her as “sweet Alesia” and shares, “I remembered the self I am not. That’s why I’m leaving.” While this may not be the actual reason for his departure (he was fired), it is impossible not to admire Johnny’s eloquent expression of self-discovery, the inherent instability of one’s identity, and the unattainable quest for wholeness. Oh, how we will miss him dearly!
At the moment, all Wihan manages to say is baby talk noises. To clarify, just before being summoned to the bridge, he tells Adair that he was well aware it was Alesia who had climbed into his bed the night before, and believed she merely wanted to talk to someone other than Johnny or Harry. Therefore, when he later claims not to “comprehend the source of all this,” he is clearly lying through self-deprecation. His belief that everyone is caught up in a pointless conspiracy against him only exacerbates the situation: Jason’s main argument is that Wihan refuses to accept responsibility for anything. Wrapping his arms around an unresponsive Adair, who might as well have been hugging a tree, he maintains that he doesn’t grasp why he is being dismissed. Contrastingly, Adair understands: Wihan couldn’t convince himself, her, or anyone else that he isn’t the source of the problem.
Jason gathers everyone for a swift team meeting prior to their planned excursion, informing them about the recent terminations. Despite the tense atmosphere, the outing is still scheduled. They all climb into vans, including Jason, an intriguing detail I noticed. Given the tumultuous start to the day, it seems team bonding might be beneficial. However, I pondered if perhaps Jason should be aboard the vessel, searching for a new bosun and deckhand before the impending arrival of new guests in less than 24 hours. He does depart after obtaining CVs from an agency and observing two massive 300-year-old turtles engaged in combat. The rest of the crew relaxes on the beach, enjoying themselves with swimming, sunbathing, and attempting to regain their composure.
The following day, with the bosun still absent, Jason summons Harry for a gathering regarding the preference sheet. The upcoming event features Nikita, a female primary celebrating her company’s PR firm’s fourth anniversary alongside other executives. Meanwhile, department heads and Harry scrutinize resumes of two fresh deckhands who soon arrive. The bosun, named Nate from Australia, resembles a lumberjack with seven years of yachting experience. He shares his background of growing up with sisters, which is endearing, but raises questions about potential hidden depths… His assistant, Nick, new to the yachting scene, makes his debut this season. In an unusual move, he admits, “You won’t believe it, but I wasn’t popular in high school.” Indeed, Nick, I do believe you. Once Nikita and her companions board, Nick is instantly smitten by them all.
The performance continues, and while the revitalized team seems enthusiastic, only Tzarina and Lara appear downcast. Tzarina, already annoyed by Alesia, who’s preoccupied by Johnny’s departure, feels insulted when Lara likens her to the odd-one-out sister in “The Brady Bunch.” This comparison, while excessive, hits a nerve as it mocks Tzarina’s insecurities. In contrast, Lara bristles when Jason suggests taking Marina from housekeeping for some service shifts. Despite his explanation that this acknowledges their hard work and encourages growth, Lara reluctantly complies; she even seems resistant to accepting the change. In a private moment, she confesses her displeasure, stating she doesn’t require the additional challenge of promoting Marina when there are new crew members (not even in her department) aboard the ship. By denying fair treatment to Marina, Lara risks stirring up trouble with not one but two Brazilian women.
The strife that escalates between Lara and Tzarina reaches its peak during dinner service. Initially, Lara voices her disapproval of Tzarina’s plate selection, prompting her to switch them. Later, when Jason presents a salt-encrusted red snapper for Tzarina to prepare in front of the diners, Lara attempts to halt him, arguing that the guests haven’t finished their previous course. Tzarina retorts that the fish requires cooking, leaving Lara ample time to alter their plates. Although these disagreements seem minor and may fade away among friends, a hint at the end of the episode suggests they could escalate into a far more significant issue…
The Czarina goes all out for Mob Wives night, preparing arancini, pasta, surf and turf, and snapper. It’s quite common to find lobster and steak on a Below Deck table, even when they don’t match the rest of the meal. The guests were thrilled. Following dinner, they requested drinking games, so Bri and Nick stayed up with them. When Nate and Nick inquired if they should participate in the evening’s entertainment, Jason was firm: “Abstain from alcohol, maintain your composure, and enjoy the rest.
Nick breaks the rules almost immediately, and one of the guests strikes a deal with him – if she makes a basket, he must take a drink. He agrees, she succeeds, and gulps down tequila. Bri is shocked. Quietly, she reminds him that they’re not supposed to consume alcohol during charter. He seems unconvinced about his mistake, claiming “I can’t believe I did this.” He promises her he’ll confess to the captain in the morning, which helps ease her concerns. However, I find Nick’s persona questionable. It appears he’s trying to portray a clumsy, awkward, sensitive guy who looks like the main character, but it’s hard to pull off – no one genuinely awkward boasts about their awkwardness.
It seems we’re bracing for a stormy continuation of the series, as hinted by the closing scene suggesting a blossoming romance between Alesia and Nate, intensifying conflicts between Lara and Tzarina, and Harry’s errors. Fingers crossed that these developments will breathe life into the season. Frankly, I felt the tempo of this episode was uneven, even sluggish at points. I yearn for more depth from our characters. Team, stay alert!
