Rowling’s epic saga to life, book by book, from the very first page to the last!
It’s clear that even today, there remains a strong demand for a television series based on the world of Harry Potter. Ever since the final Harry Potter movie (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2) was released in 2011, some enthusiasts have been clamoring for a new show, and their desire is finally being fulfilled.
It’s official that there will be another version of the Harry Potter books, but it’s been generally disliked. However, anticipation is growing now that some major roles have been cast. Here are the details we have at this point.
Does the Harry Potter TV show have a release date?
As an ardent Potterhead, I can’t contain my excitement about the upcoming Harry Potter series airing on HBO sometime between late 2026 and early 2027! However, they haven’t given us a specific release date just yet.
On April 12, 2023, the announcement of the show was made during Warner Bros. Discovery’s presentation. The main purpose of this announcement was to unveil that HBO Max and Discovery+ will be combined into a single streaming platform, which will be called Max.
Initially scheduled for release in 2026, there was an unexpected delay announced towards the close of 2024. Warner Bros’ JB Perrette referred to this as a “10-year adventure” for the cast and crew, suggesting that by its eventual release, it could become one of the most significant global events.
Filming for this project will start around mid-2025 summer, and considering the scale of the show, it might run for several months.
Previously, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO Zaslav announced that the series was planned for release in 2026 on Max. However, due to a reorganization of streaming services, the show has been shifted from Max to HBO, according to Deadline’s report. This also includes both Harry Potter and the IT prequel Welcome to Derry.
It has been officially announced that Francesca Gardiner will take on the role as the main producer of this upcoming series, while Mark Mylod will serve in a higher management position as an executive producer and also direct several episodes.
Who’s in the new Harry Potter cast?
In the new Harry Potter television series, it was John Lithgow who got the initial role, taking on the character of the renowned Headmaster of Hogwarts, Albus Dumbledore.

Yet, it’s interesting to note that approximately 32,000 children tried out for the younger roles, with a team reviewing around 500-1,000 auditions daily.
Are any original actors returning?
In the new Harry Potter television series, it’s unlikely that the main cast from the original films will take center stage. However, some supporting characters might make a comeback or even make brief appearances.
As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share the news: our beloved series is getting a fresh start with a new crew setting sail for a new era of fandom! It promises all the intricate details, cherished characters, and breathtaking settings that have captivated Harry Potter fans for more than two decades.
Given that Radcliffe, Watson, and Grint have openly expressed disagreement with JK Rowling’s stance on transgender individuals, it’s unlikely you’ll see them reprising their Harry Potter roles anytime soon.
From my perspective as a devoted fan, while it’s exciting to imagine the original supporting cast making an appearance, I find it unlikely due to potential complications with the storyline. Such appearances might confuse the narrative flow and add unnecessary complexity without any clear benefit. So, while I’d love to see them again, I don’t anticipate it happening in this context.

As a game enthusiast, I can certainly relate that TV, with its extended narrative structure, seems tailor-made for epic book series like Harry Potter. After all, TV is where intricate character growth, sprawling universe creation, and organic character development really shine. It offers ample room to unfold the tale at a leisurely pace.
The disadvantages lie primarily in the budget and scale. Usually, even costly TV shows may not match the visual grandeur of a major motion picture. For instance, some early Harry Potter films might seem overly dramatic with their special effects, but many scenes were filmed on location, and the CGI quality significantly improved as the series progressed.
Despite not being able to delve as deeply as lengthy television series, exceptional films have always been cherished by audiences and praised by critics. Maintaining that esteemed status will undoubtedly prove challenging. Additionally, revisiting the same significant plot points may also be an issue.
