Previous Sony president, Shuhei Yoshida, expresses concern that Nintendo may be straying from its unique character with the Switch 2 being perceived as a more advanced variant of its prior model.
Following numerous whispers and anticipation, the long-awaited Nintendo Switch 2 was unveiled in January 2025, with a detailed presentation following suit in April. This provided enthusiasts with their first comprehensive glimpse at the upcoming console, along with its launch titles such as Mario Kart World.
Although some enthusiasts looked forward to the upcoming Nintendo games, others expressed skepticism, pointing out concerns regarding battery life and certain absent features.
Currently, former PlayStation head Shuhei Yoshida has shared his opinions regarding the unveiling of the Switch 2, and it appears he didn’t find it particularly exciting.
Shuhei Yoshida wasn’t impressed with Nintendo Switch 2 reveal
In a conversation on the Easy Allies Podcast, Yoshida expressed his opinion that Nintendo has strayed from its unique trait of creating consoles that push boundaries and embrace innovation, like the Wii and the first Switch model.
In his own words, Nintendo’s mission has always been centered around crafting unique adventures, whether it’s through the development of innovative hardware and software that result in an extraordinary, fresh gaming experience.
Indeed, as many of us expected, Switch 2 appears to be an enhanced version of the original. It boasts a larger screen, a more potent processor, 4K capability, and a frame rate of up to 120 per second. Just like on other platforms, they’ve started the stream with their hardware expert.

In the end, Yoshida believed that Nintendo was following a similar pattern to what PlayStation and Xbox typically do, which is improving upon their current hardware, instead of making the bold, innovative leaps that the company has taken in the past.
He explained, “Since we’ve improved the design significantly, the fundamental concept behind Switch 2 is ‘we’ve enhanced everything.’ Other companies are consistently following this approach as well.
Apart from discussing the other major announcements made during the first Switch 2 Direct, he highlighted that additional third-party games will be joining the platform, such as Elden Ring. Yet, he expressed this news as thrilling only for those whose gaming is strictly limited to Nintendo devices, when it’s important to note that many gamers own multiple consoles.
On June 3rd, the anticipated release of the Nintendo Switch 2 is just around the corner. It won’t be long before we find out if this console truly delivers on its buzz!
