Harry Potter fans already want Adam Driver to replace Paapa Essiedu as Snape

Just one minute has passed after HBO announced Paapa Essiedu as the new Professor Severus Snape for the Harry Potter TV series, and some fans are already advocating for Adam Driver to step into that role instead.

On April 14th, it was officially revealed that six principal actors had been chosen for the upcoming series. Among them are John Lithgow portraying Dumbledore, Janet McTeer stepping into the role of McGonagall, Nick Frost taking on Hagrid, Luke Thallon as Quirrel, and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch.

Previously, there were discussions about Essiedu potentially assuming the role of Snape, following the demise of Alan Rickman who played the character in the Harry Potter films. However, this news has now been confirmed as true.

Previously mentioned, the versatile actor from Black Mirror seems perfectly suited for portraying the emotional depth required of a Hogwarts professor, offering a new perspective to the series. Yet, some enthusiasts are advocating for a different actor instead.

Harry Potter TV show sparks calls for Adam Driver to play Snape

Some people highly appreciate Essiedu’s casting choice, but others on social media propose Adam Driver as an alternative, arguing that his background in franchise roles and physical appearance align better with the character description of Snape as written by J.K. Rowling in her original books.

On Twitter, someone expressed their opinion by saying, “On multiple occasions, I’ve stated this, and I’ll say it yet again: Adam Driver would have been an ideal choice for Severus Snape. In my view, HBO and J.K. Rowling missed the mark.

It’s possible that Driver might not have taken the role had it been offered. However, given the actor who eventually played it, I find it unlikely he was ever approached for the part. It’s quite disheartening.

A different user commented, “Adam Driver would make an excellent Snape. Warner Bros, it’s not too late for a change.” Another user chimed in, “Not selecting Adam Driver to portray Severus Snape in HBO’s Harry Potter adaptation appears to be a regrettable decision by the casting team.

One fan who identifies as a Potterhead has started a change.org petition advocating for the replacement of the current casting with the Star Wars actor. However, at the time of this writing, the petition has garnered just five signatures.

Alternatively, it’s been noted that the actual appearance of Snape isn’t the sole determining factor for casting. Concentrating excessively on looks could lead to overlooking the essence of the series, which is about re-telling the tale and introducing something new in the magical realm.

Keep in mind, this is Snape’s physical description as described in the books – his complexion was yellowish or unhealthy-looking, not white. It seems surprising that some individuals dedicate their livelihood to criticizing a fictional character’s skin tone.

As a dedicated Harry Potter enthusiast, I couldn’t help but echo the vivid character portrayal of Severus Snape, penned in the books. This intriguing figure is described as a man of lean build, with skin that has a pale, almost sickly hue, a prominent, hook-shaped nose, and teeth that are yellowed and slightly misaligned.

His raven-black hair, oily and reaching down to his shoulders, encircles his face, while his chilly, dark eyes lend a haunting aspect. He dons flowing black robes that make him resemble more like an oversized bat in the night.

The Twitter user elaborated, “Remember, the book’s description of Snape’s appearance doesn’t equate to pale or fair-skinned; it specifically mentions that his complexion is sickly or yellowish.

In earlier times, men would participate in wars; now, there are some who find themselves in such a pitiful state that they spend their time complaining about the ethnicity of a fictitious character as their occupation.

A supporter of the casting decision commented, “Paapa Essiedu is indeed an ideal fit for this role.
