Samsung Electronics is significantly expanding its presence in the UK’s virtual production sector by announcing a strategic alliance with esteemed Twickenham Film Studios and VP experts Quite Brilliant. Together, they plan to establish one of the biggest permanent LED display soundstages in Britain.
At Twickenham’s historical Stage 3, a new setup is under construction, boasting an impressive 24 meter wide and 4.5 meter high backdrop wall, a sprawling 105 square meter LED ceiling, and movable LED totem walls for added versatility. This setup will also include a permanent rotating platform (turntable) and a motion-controlled crane. The aim is to finish this installation by the end of June this year.
This installation marks Samsung’s first significant LED screen construction in the U.K., making it their third such project globally, following Paju, Korea and Paris, France. The new U.K. site will employ Samsung’s advanced IVC 2.1 pixel pitch technology and ARRI color calibration management system. This enormous LED screen generates virtual settings that can be combined with real-time visual effects technology, offering filmmakers fresh creative opportunities.
As a follower, I’m excited to delve into the advanced capabilities of Samsung’s Virtual Production Wall. This innovative system boasts technological advancements such as 3D lookup tables for refined color correction, high-dynamic-range (HDR) color processing across a broad spectrum, and flexible color adjustment options.
The system’s design includes an enhanced 4:9 aspect ratio, a lightning-fast refresh rate of 12,288 Hz, Black Seal Technology+ for superior black level definition, and 20-bit processing for meticulous color mapping precision.
This collaboration additionally creates a Samsung facility within Twickenham, a location famous for its top-tier post-production team that has earned Oscars. As virtual production becomes increasingly significant across industries, this alliance places both entities at the cutting edge of emerging technology in the United Kingdom’s market regarding new production techniques.
Deborah Honig, VP and chief customer officer at Samsung Electronics, expressed her enthusiasm about the potential impact of our cutting-edge picture quality and screen technology on Virtual Production. This innovation paves the way for unbounded possibilities for filmmakers, content creators, and producers across various sectors, as it enhances digital effects and simplifies the process of creating virtual content, making it more efficient and affordable.
Kenneth Branagh, who has resided in Twickenham for the last five years, stated: “I adore living here. The skilled team is consistently dedicated to providing top-notch work. This fantastic collaboration with Samsung further cements Twickenham’s role as a crucial element of the British film industry’s future.
For Sunny Vohra, the owner of Twickenham, this partnership signifies a significant new stage for the historic studio that he obtained in 2012: “This fresh endeavor symbolizes the upcoming phase of our multi-year plan to pour resources into Twickenham’s future. Samsung is our ideal ally. They recognize the worth of our world-class, award-winning team and admire our method of balancing technology investment with people investment.
Remarkably skilled in the field, the 2023 Advertising Producers’ Association ‘Best use of Virtual Production’ award winners, The Brilliant, boast a wealth of experience for their projects. As highlighted by the company’s managing director Chris Chaundler, their collaborative design approach is key: “Having completed over 200 virtual production (VP) projects in the last five years, we have worked closely with Samsung to develop stages tailored to the needs of producers and directors. This design process is a result of filmmakers working together for fellow filmmakers.
Russell Shaw, who leads Quite Brilliant’s virtual production department, commented that the new stage will cater to a wide variety of projects: “This stage will work with all types of productions, ranging from films and TV shows to advertising and social media content. This declaration reflects Twickenham’s dedication to the future of filmmaking, as well as its support for the U.K.’s film, television, and media sector, while also adopting cutting-edge technologies.
