According to Mat Piscatella, Executive Director and Video Game Industry Analyst at Circana, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows has seen significant success, as reported on BlueSky today. The sales figures for this game in its initial weeks following the March 20th, 2025 launch have been highlighted. This latest addition to the Assassin’s Creed series has generated a lot of buzz for various reasons beyond just Ubisoft’s recent business strategies.
Assassin’s Creed: Shadows has been consistently near the top of US sales
If you haven’t heard the news yet, just a fortnight ago, Ubisoft, the big video game publisher, revealed their plans to establish a new subsidiary with Tencent, following closely after the release of Assassin’s Creed: Shadows. Despite the recent launch successes, Ubisoft has faced several setbacks in the past few years, such as underperforming titles like Star Wars: Outlaws and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, studio closures, layoffs, and the termination of XDefiant, a live service FPS. Given these challenges, many speculated whether Assassin’s Creed: Shadows would be enough to turn things around for the publisher, but it seems that hasn’t been the case.
The new partnership will primarily focus on Ubisoft’s most profitable franchises – Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six – leaving other studios and projects in uncertainty.
Despite not being an immediate blockbuster, “Assassin’s Creed: Shadows” has shown robust sales figures. As per Piscatella’s post, “Assassin’s Creed: Shadows” topped the US video game sales charts in its first three weeks on the market, and it currently ranks second this year, trailing only “Monster Hunter: Wilds.” Despite facing delays and various development challenges, “Shadows” has proven itself as one of the top-selling games of 2025 thus far. Keep in mind that we are still early in both the game’s lifespan and the year, so if Grand Theft Auto 6 launches later this year, it may only be a contest for the second spot.
Regardless of some strong criticisms levied at Ubisoft’s decisions for Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, it has generally been met with favorable responses from both fans and critics. On review platforms like OpenCritic and Metacritic, Shadows boasts a commendable score of 82/100 and 81/100 respectively. Similarly, on Steam, the game has garnered positive feedback from over sixteen thousand players, with approximately 80% of the reviews being positive. This is higher than the scores of the two preceding games in the series.
Over the next few months, it’ll be intriguing to watch these trends evolve. A number of upcoming games could create a significant stir in terms of sales, and there might be unexpected developments too. However, we’ll need to observe how Assassin’s Creed: Shadows performs as the year unfolds, taking into account the anticipated release of DLC, Claws of Awaji, later on.
