Internet users are finding themselves at odds following popular Twitch personality, Asmongold, disclosing his past stance on not tipping at restaurants prior to becoming wealthy.
Before becoming a well-known content creator on Twitch, Asmongold experienced a challenging childhood, a topic he’s discussed in previous videos.
Raised in modest circumstances, he was known for not leaving tips at restaurants, as per Asmon’s account. Yet, it wasn’t about money for him; instead, his concern revolved around who would receive the tip.
During a live broadcast in April 2025, Asmongold likened receiving tips to “taking undeserved honors,” expressing his preference for directly tipping those who prepare his meals instead of the servers who deliver them.
Asmongold slams tipping culture as “stolen valor”
He mentioned that he’s not been one to tip in the past, but now that he has sufficient funds, he no longer have any issues leaving tips. This was true even when he was being served.
The Twitch streamer continued, stating that the chefs at restaurants don’t get enough credit.
He expressed his preference for directly tipping the chef and cook who prepared his meal over the waiter who served it. It’s as if they were taking undeserved credit, he stated emphatically. The person in the kitchen was working tirelessly, while someone else gets the recognition.
Asmongold shares that he used not to leave tips, preferring for his money to go directly to the kitchen staff instead of waiters. He refers to this as a kind of “stolen valor” towards those who prepare his meals.

In simpler terms, Asmongold pointed out that finding a new waiter is more straightforward now due to services such as Uber Eats and Doordash, which are essentially taking over this role. This analogy implies that cooks, on the other hand, are harder to replace because their skills can’t be easily replicated by technology.
These comments ignited intense discussions among online communities, as users debated for and against Asmongold’s perspective. Many argued that it’s the responsibility of the government to increase the minimum wage and eliminate tipping altogether.
One method for rephrasing the given statement in a more natural and easy-to-understand manner could be: “The custom of tipping provides upper middle-class Americans with an opportunity that is socially acceptable to express superiority and moral judgment towards working-class Americans.

In the midst of the ongoing discussion, Asmongold shared his thoughts on a tweet from Drama Alert, explaining his stance against tipping and giving reasons for it.
The custom of tipping in upper-middle-class America provides an unusual chance to express moral superiority towards working-class individuals, which is one reason why it persists. It serves as a socially acceptable method for class discrimination.
It’s not just Asmongold who has faced criticism for his stance on tipping, and it’s possible that others may follow suit. For instance, in 2024, a TikToker gained popularity after she shared that she saved $150 per week by choosing not to tip at restaurants.
