As a dedicated admirer, I can’t help but feel a pang of longing for the timeless masterpiece that is GoldenEye 007. Despite numerous attempts, Nightdive Studios has been unable to deliver a remastered version due to what seems to be a roadblock from Nintendo. Stephen Kick, their head honcho, shared in an interview that they’ve made every effort to bring it back, but alas, Nintendo appears to have put a hold on the project.
Nightdive Studios specializes in reviving classic video games for contemporary platforms, boasting a diverse catalog that includes hits like Turok, Doom 64, Quake II, and numerous others.
Kick shared with VGC that it was truly disappointing for the GoldenEye remaster project not to materialize. Kick mentioned that Nightdive Studios invested substantial energy in presenting the game and recruiting an ideal team to bring it to life. He noted that MGM/Eon were supportive, but unfortunately, negotiations with Nintendo didn’t work out smoothly, leading to the project’s demise.
Following the approval from MGM/Eon, the conversation went as follows: “Alright, we’re all set to proceed,” they said. “By the way, have you secured the rights from Nintendo?” There was a moment of surprise, as it seemed they assumed that detail had already been taken care of. To which Nintendo responded, “Indeed, no external party will ever be allowed to handle any Nintendo-related material, period.” This is according to Kick’s account.
As a gaming enthusiast here, I can tell you from personal experience that Nightdive Studios has a rich history of collaborating with Nintendo. In fact, we were the pioneers who successfully ported a classic N64 game, Turok, onto the Nintendo Switch. That definitely caught their eye! However, it didn’t immediately blossom into a full-fledged partnership, but hey, every interaction counts in this industry, right?
Kuperman further remarked that Nintendo’s “strategy for success in business” has proven effective, which is why he can comprehend their decision to prevent Nightdive from creating a remaster.
The individual stated that it seems challenging for Nintendo to deviate from their usual practices. Moreover, it’s unclear if they anticipated some aspects of the product might fall short. What was presented was rather modest, in his opinion. He attempted to express this delicately, but he believes it’s unlikely Nintendo would claim they could make an exception in such a case.
2023 saw the arrival of GoldenEye 007 on Nintendo Switch and Xbox. At present, it’s accessible through Xbox Game Pass. On Xbox, the game boasts support for 4K resolution, ensuring smoother performance. Previously, an unofficial version of GoldenEye 007 for Xbox 360 surfaced online, supposedly due to rights and licensing problems. Now, the situation could be more complex since Amazon MGM Studios now holds the James Bond rights, with Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson’s partnership being dissolved as part of a dramatic reshuffling in Hollywood.
