Despite the weekend showcase revealing many aspects of Marathon, there remains uncertainty about one significant detail: its price. Developer Bungie has confirmed that Marathon won’t be a game sold at full price, but they have yet to disclose the exact cost. Further details on the entry fee are expected to be announced in the summer.
Initially, TopMob’s preview of the Marathon game suggested that due to Bungie calling it a “premium title,” it would be sold at full price. However, Wario64 later shared these details before clarifying from the official Marathon account that the pricing for the game is not yet set in stone. While it’s promised as a premium gaming experience, it won’t come with a high price tag (around $70). The final cost of the game will be revealed at a later date.
Instead of saying “Marathon will be a premium title,” you could say “Marathon will carry a higher price tag.” And instead of “We’ll announce details this Summer,” you could say “More information about the game will be revealed this Summer.” This way, the sentences are easier to understand and still convey the intended meaning.

In September last year, it was announced that Marathon would have a purchase price of $40. At that time, there were no indications that they were planning to switch to a free-to-play model, and it seemed that the shooter game was too far along in development for such a change. Previously, Sony (now the owner of Bungie) had launched similar live-service games at $40: Helldivers 2 and Concord. The sales figures from these games were markedly distinct, but there is a history of this price point for such games.
It’s confirmed that Marathon will debut on September 23 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Coincidentally, Borderlands 4 is also scheduled for release on the same day. Prior to that, there will be a closed alpha testing phase for Marathon this month. If you’d like to get involved, consider joining their Discord server.
As a dedicated gamer, I find myself engaged in a price-point discussion this month, not just about Marathon, but also Mario Kart World on the Switch 2. Nintendo has been quite open about the $80 launch price of Mario Kart World in June, which has stirred some conversations. Additionally, the fact that Switch 2 Welcome Tour isn’t included as a free experience with the new system has left many of us slightly surprised.
