Pop sensation Katy Perry and CBS Mornings host Gayle King were part of a team of six women who embarked on a journey to the fringes of space, courtesy of Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin space exploration company, on Monday.
On Monday morning at 9:30 ET, I watched in awe as Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket roared to life and blasted off from their West Texas launch site, propelling itself into the cosmos!
During a journey lasting approximately eight minutes, the flight ascended over 62 miles above the earth’s surface, surpassing the Kármán line – an altitude deemed as the international boundary of space according to Blue Origin. Blue Origin assures its space tourism clients that this voyage offers an opportunity to experience a few minutes of weightlessness and breathtaking vistas of Earth. The capsule carrying the astronauts, supported by three parachutes, touched down several minutes following the rocket’s descent.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I find myself captivated by the innovative journey of the New Shepard rocket. Instead of having a pilot, it autonomously soars through the skies. Accompanying Perry and King on this extraordinary mission are Lauren Sánchez, Bezos’ fiancée, journalist, philanthropist, Aisha Bowe, an engineer with NASA roots, Amanda Nguyen, a distinguished activist and scientist, and Kerianne Flynn, a renowned movie producer. This launch is not just about space travel; it’s a powerful statement aimed at highlighting the remarkable contributions of women in the field of aeronautics.
Perry mentioned on Instagram over the weekend that she wants to sing in space. During a CBS interview with the new astronauts, she clarified that if given the opportunity, her performance wouldn’t be self-centered but rather an ode to Earth. She expressed that from such a vantage point, one can’t help but feel a profound need to safeguard our planet, viewing it as our mother.
It’s true that Perry sang something during the flight. At first, it wasn’t clear from the broadcast what song she was singing, but later on, King revealed in an interview that it was “What a Wonderful World.
Before the launch, King openly expressed feeling both anxious and exhilarated, saying, “I’ve not hidden my nerves, but I’m also incredibly thrilled.
The television broadcast featured clips of individuals on the ground celebrating as the rocket launched and climbed higher. A few minutes later, it surpassed the speed of sound and penetrated the Earth’s atmosphere.
The astronauts were heard marveling at the sight of the moon.
Upon their return, Amazon’s founder and chairman, Bezos, was the one to welcome the astronauts first by opening the hatch with a wrench. He then greeted Sanchez. Following him, Perry exited the capsule and paid homage to the ground beneath her by kneeling and kissing it. King also repeated this tradition upon his exit.
In 2000, Blue Origin was initially set up. It took its maiden voyage in July 2021, with passengers that included Bezos and Wally Funk, a trailblazing female astronaut who had undergone training for NASA’s Mercury program back in the 1960s.
The significance of the occurrence was underscored by a remark made by an announcer post-landing: “It’s astonishing how everyone on the ground has been gazing at the sky for quite some time now – and not a single person has looked at their phone.
