“0% chance I’m playing it over Borderlands 4” – Marathon, from the Destiny 2 creators, is facing some serious problems

Bungie is reviving Marathon, the influential 90’s shooter that laid the foundation for games like Halo and Destiny. However, unlike the original story-driven single-player game, this new version will be a team-based extraction shooter. Reactions to this change are varied, with some players expressing disapproval due to the art style or character design, while others are disappointed by the genre shift itself.

Marathon’s big reveal lands with a thud

Following all the excitement, Bungie unveiled gameplay for Marathon, a title initially hinted at in 2023. However, the response from gamers has been quite critical, particularly since it’s set to debut on the same day as Borderlands 4 – September 23, 2025. This decision has left many questioning whether it’s a daring move or an oversight, as launching on such a competitive day seems more like playing roulette than making a calculated strategy.

EpicNNG says on X:

It’s such a bummer that Bungie are dropping MARATHON on the same day as Borderlands 4

Game looks good, but there is a 0% chance I’m playing it over BL4

Sorry Bungie

Although, considering he’s a huge Borderlands fan, that was pretty obvious in this case.

The launch date is important, but what really sets this apart is that it won’t be a free-to-play game. Given that Bungie is now part of Sony’s studio family, it seems plausible that it may follow the same path as Concord in terms of its business model. The comments under the trailer seem to echo this sentiment.

Looks like Concord is back on the Menu Boys.

Concord was so good they made them a sequel

Exactly what we were hoping for! A shooter focusing on resource extraction that doesn’t bring anything new to the table compared to all the other similar games in the genre.

Team based extraction shooter. Striking while the iron is dead cold.

It’s a bit puzzling as to why Bungie, renowned for their epic campaigns, is creating another extraction shooter that seems indistinguishable from others in the genre. With launch day approaching, we can only anticipate and hope for the best, but it’s challenging to stay optimistic when so many players are already expressing feelings of underwhelm.

In contrast to other platforms like PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S, the latest Marathon game will not be available on macOS. Interestingly, the original version of this game was exclusively released for macOS.
