Based in Brussels, the company Best Friend Forever has obtained global rights for the screening of “A Useful Ghost” before its worldwide debut at Cannes Critics’ Week.
In his first full-length movie, ‘A Useful Ghost’, Ratchapoom Boonbunchachoke showcases his talent, having previously directed the short film ‘Red Aninsri; Or, Tiptoeing on the Still Trembling Berlin Wall’ which was screened at Locarno in 2020.
The movie narrates the tale of March, a man grieving for his late wife Nat, who passed away from dust pollution. To his surprise, he finds that Nat’s spirit has manifested in an unusual way – as a vacuum cleaner. March accepts this and they embark on an atypical romance between a human and a ghost. However, March’s family is troubled by the disruption caused by the ghost of a former factory worker, and they reject their relationship. Determined to prove the legitimacy of their love, Nat decides to help the family by cleaning up the factory as a helpful spirit.
Although Thailand is famous for producing horror movies that send shivers down spines, ‘A Useful Ghost’ takes a different approach, not aiming to frighten or scare viewers but rather encouraging them to ponder the bond between humans and ghosts in our culture,” Boonbunchachoke explained.
The director explained, “Back when I began this project, some playful questions about ghosts like ‘How do they live?’, ‘Do they depend on the living to exist?’, ‘What’s their mechanism?’, and ‘Who pays their rent?’ came to mind. My aim was to take this original concept and transform it into a light-hearted tale filled with humor and social commentary.
Martin Gondre and Charles Bin, founders of Best Friend Forever, commented that “Ratchapoom skillfully created a completely original film, seamlessly blending the impact of his mentors’ styles into something exceptionally contemporary and innovative. He combined genres in an unprecedented way.
The movie titled “A Useful Ghost” boasts a powerful Thai acting ensemble, featuring Davika Hoorne from “Pee Mak”, Apasiri Nitibhon, and Wisarut Himmarat. This film is produced by 185 Films, known for “Morte Cucina”, Haut Les Mains, the creators of “Where The Wind Comes From”, and Momo Film Co, responsible for “Don’t Cry”.
Under the banner of “Best Friend Forever,” their selection for Cannes Film Festival additionally features Guillermo Galoe’s “Sleepless City.” This film is also scheduled to screen during Critics’ Week.
