Over the weekend of April 11-13, I found myself caught up in a thrilling competition at China’s box office as “We Girls,” distributed by Meila Media, narrowly took the lead. This female ensemble drama added an impressive RMB33.4 million ($4.6 million) to its earnings during its second weekend, pushing its overall total to a staggering $20 million, as reported by Artisan Gateway. As a movie lover, I couldn’t help but feel excited about the success of this captivating film!
Under the guidance of director Feng Xiaogang, the film titled “We Girls” chronicles the life of Gao Yuexiang, portrayed by Zhao Liying. In an attempt to gather funds for her daughter’s cochlear implant, she makes a risky move that results in her incarceration. Within the prison walls, she encounters fellow inmates Hei Mei (Lan Xiya), Deng Hong (Chuai Ni), Hu Ping (Wang Ju), and Guo Aimei (Cheng Xiao). Despite their diverse characters, these women forge a connection, standing by each other during hardships and defying the hand fate has dealt them.
Coming in at second position, “A Minecraft Movie,” produced by Warner Bros. and Legendary, earned an additional $4.4 million. This movie, inspired by the internationally acclaimed video game series, has now accumulated a total of $20.6 million since its release on April 4.

In its 11th weekend, “Ne Zha 2” continued to hold strong in third place, earning $3.3 million, boosting its total earnings to an astonishing $2.11 billion. This animated film by Cococartoon is still making history and currently rules as the undisputed box office king of 2025.
In fourth position, “Mumu” from CKF Pictures, a moving drama, earned an additional $2.7 million, raising its overall earnings to $14.6 million. Directed by Mo Sha, this film tells the story of a seven-year-old girl who was raised in a deaf community with her father. Her peaceful life is upended when her long-absent mother reappears and introduces her to the hearing world.
In the top five earnings, Shanghai Film Group’s action movie “Fox Hunt,” directed by Zhang Leo and starring Tony Leung Chiu-wai and Yihong Duan, about a group of Chinese investigators chasing economic offenders, earned an additional $1.6 million, bringing its total gross to $6.3 million.
In summary, China’s weekend box office earnings dropped from $52.5 million (the previous frame) to $20.8 million. Despite this decline, the total revenue for the year has surged to $3.48 billion, marking a 40.3% increase compared to the same timeframe in 2024. This suggests that the movie market is still strongly recovering post-pandemic.
