Vietnamese cinema’s global progression is marked by the upcoming North American theatrical release of “The Ancestral Home,” a successful venture for Skyline Media, which will be handled by Eastern Edge Films on May 9.
The movie that holds the record for Vietnam’s top-earning spiritual film, raking in close to $10 million at the local box office, is set to make its debut during Asian American History Month as part of a worldwide release plan, with a focus on strategic positioning.
Under the guidance of director Huynh Lap, who also appears in the movie, “The Ancestral Home” has drawn in over 3 million viewers since its local debut on February 21. The film showcases pop star-turned-actor Phuong My Chi in her inaugural leading role, alongside established actor Huynh Dong and seasoned performers Dao Anh Tuan and Hanh Thuy.
The comedy-drama showcases a modern-day content producer from Generation Z venturing back to her family’s hometown in search of popular online content, but instead finds herself confronted by the ghost of her late brother and greedy relatives along the way.
Alice Nguyen, distribution manager at Skyline Media, stated that “The Ancestral Home” represents a significant stride in the worldwide acknowledgement of Vietnamese cinema. The film’s triumph within Vietnam and its distinct combination of humor, emotion, and cultural heritage make it an ideal match for international viewers, particularly during culturally relevant occasions such as the Qingming Festival in Taiwan and Asian American History Month in the United States.
The movie’s global debut started on April 2, screened in Taiwan via MovieCloud, aligning with the Qingming festival. Starting from April 24, audiences in Australia and New Zealand will have the chance to watch it through Infinity Entertainment. Further releases are planned in Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos by EST Media at a later date.
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but marvel at the unprecedented cultural resonance this film has struck. In just the first three months of 2025 alone, it sparked more than 3.8 million conversations on social media! But what truly sets it apart is its astonishing Net Sentiment Rate of 84%. That’s not just high – it’s the highest in its category!
Based out of New Jersey, Eastern Edge Films – a company founded by Jawahar Sharma – focuses on distributing both stage and non-stage Asian and Arabic films across North America. Most recently, they released the Vietnamese blockbuster “The Real Sister,” which played in over 106 different venues across the U.S. and Canada.
Skyline Media boasts a vast catalog of over 800 international movies and acts as the representative for over 150 Vietnamese and Southeast Asian films. This global powerhouse has connections in over 50 nations, fostered by more than 130 strategic collaborations worldwide.
