YouTube personality Vikkstar has been met with criticism following the release of an artificially-generated music video for his recent track, “Chemical.” The video was produced by AI technology.
Belonging to the Sidemen YouTube collective, Vikkstar is now counted among the top British personalities garnering significant popularity on the platform.
He has accumulated more than 7.5 million followers on his personal channel, which he uses sporadically to post vlogs and music clips.
On the 8th of April, Tuesday, Vikkstar posted a video showcasing his latest composition titled “Chemical”. However, soon after, he faced criticism for employing Artificial Intelligence in its creation.
Vikkstar faces backlash over AI use
In the video, Vikkstar initially appears as his normal self, but later drinks from an unmarked container, which triggers a stream of electricity emanating from his face.
The setting keeps shifting rapidly, ultimately transforming so that the YouTube personality appears as a figure resembling an astronaut, descending from the heavens and landing amidst a sprawling urban environment.
Vikk affirmed the application of Artificial Intelligence in the comments, yet emphasized that a significant amount of “human creativity” was also poured into the video over several weeks.
He mentioned that for better understanding, a significant amount of time and human creativity were invested in this project. This included concept development, creating storyboards, animating, constructing models, rendering scenes multiple times, and editing them. He expressed his desire to explore the role of AI in our future, which is inevitable, within this project as well.
Initially, many users rapidly expressed their opinions in the comment section, primarily criticizing Vikkstar for utilizing artificial intelligence.
One user commented, “The lack of emotion in this music video makes me think it’s created by AI. If you asked someone who watched it 10 minutes ago to describe it, they might only mention the use of lasers and strange facial images.
“Vikkstar using AI… we are so, so cooked,” a second replied.
A third shared: “Please don’t turn into kwebbelkop with his AI slop vids.”
In August 2023, Dutch YouTuber Kweebbelkop debuted an AI substitute to produce his videos, which promptly ignited criticism from his longtime followers. Nevertheless, he’s since taken down those videos from his channel and resumed posting content featuring himself once more.
